Loudoun Parents Question Decision to Limit Bus Service for Students

Loudoun parents are protesting the county school board’s decision to limit bus service for students next year, the Washington Post reported.

About 4,000 additional students will no longer have bus service in an effort to cut spending, the newspaper reported.

The county’s support services staff presented the adjustments at the school board’s decisions in June 11 meeting.

“This is simply going back and looking at the existing policy and looking at the changes in traffic flow,” Eric Hornberger, chairman of the school board, said in the meeting.

School officials also discussed putting in place additional crossing guards to support students walking to school.

Parents posted comments about the changes on school board member Debbie Rose’s public Facebook page:

“With all due respect, how healthy is it for a middle school child to walk .09 miles with a 15+ backpack? Where will the school board be when these children develop chronic back and neck pain?,” one comment from Jackie Baker Huchler  read.

Parents met with school officials to discuss the changes earlier this week, and some parents are skeptical about just how walk-able the routes will be.

“The school system has washed its hands of the responsibility for my kids’ safety,” Claire De Angioletti, a Leesburg mother, told the Post.
