Loudoun Schools: 100 Teachers and Staff Likely Cut in Budget Squeeze

Reconciling the Fiscal Year (FY) 2015 Budget resulted in a reduction of $37.7 million, including the loss of 282.3 Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) jobs for the 2014-15 school year.

The potential job cuts are distributed among non-school-based funding (12.6 percent), school-based funding (68.4 percent) and combination (18.9 percent). According to the 2014 Washington Area Boards of Education (WABE) Guide, LCPS has the lowest percentage of non-school-based personnel (including central administration) – at 6.9 percent – in the Washington, D.C., area.

The LCPS Department of Personnel Services has worked non-stop since the School Board reconciled a $37.7 million deficit on April 22 force (RIF). By filling openings created by retirements, resignations and the opening of new schools, the Department of Personnel Services estimates it will be able to place all but about 100 employees reduced in force.

The absolute deadline for letting teachers know if their job has been eliminated is June 15.

Because the placement of those affected by the RIF – including middle school deans, Spanish teachers, English language learner assistants, administrative interns, math facilitators, library assistants and technology assistants – means some employees will be moved to positions in other schools or departments, the Department of Personnel Services is contacting more than 1,000 LCPS employees affected by these changes.
