Sanders Corner Elementary School Students Honor Veterans

Relatives of students who have served in the military gathered at the school for the ceremony.

Students at Sanders Corner Elementary School (SCES) in Ashburn Farm recognized local veterans in the school’s first annual Veterans Day Assembly Nov. 11. Under the guidance of Principal Kathleen Hwang and PTA President Donna Columbo, the entire student body, faculty and parents participated in thanking, honoring and remembering the sacrifices veterans have made for the United States.

In attendance, were relatives of SCES students who fought in WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan), and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Chief Petty Officer Joey Alonso (ret.) presided over an uplifting and emotional ceremony, which included the presentation and procession of colors by SCES Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Veterans were honored with the song American Tears, led by fifth graders Ainsley Steger and John Montijo, and accompanied by the student body under the musical guidance of Angela Hayes. Sanders Corner Elementary School proudly commemorated our nation’s heroes this Veterans Day.
