School Board Seeks Input Regarding Student Calendar

The board is scheduled to adopt the 2013-2014 calendar on Oct. 9.

Last week, the Loudoun County School Board got its first look at a staff-proposed student calendar for the 2013-2014 school year. The board is scheduled to adopt the 2013-2014 student calendar during its Oct. 9 meeting.

The following is the proposed calendar:

Sept. 3: First Day of School for Students
Oct. 14: Holiday (Columbus Day)
Nov. 4-5: Student Holidays (Planning/Records/Conference Days)
Nov. 27-29: Holiday (Thanksgiving)
Dec. 23-January 1: Winter Break (Classes Resume January 2)
Jan. 20: Holiday (Martin Luther King Jr. Day)
Jan. 27: Moveable Student Holiday (Planning/Records/Conference Day)
Feb. 17: Holiday (Presidents’ Day)
March 31: Student Holiday (Planning/Records/Conference Day)
April 14-18: Holiday (Spring Break)
May 26: Holiday (Memorial Day)
June 13: Last Day of School for Students/End of Grading Period

Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) has lost its waiver under Section 22.1-79.1 of the Code of Virginia – otherwise known as the “Kings Dominion Law” – which means it cannot open school before Labor Day in 2013.

The board would like to receive public input on the proposed calendar prior to their Oct. 9 meeting. Input can be sent to lcsb@lcps.org.

Thank God the schools are back to starting after Labor Day. It was ridiculous to start school and then have a holiday off 5 days later - very disruptive to getting the kids back in the groove of school, and it takes away from their summer. I guess it's a matter of preference (out early versus starting later.) However, why can't we have it both ways? I would propose eliminating the "spring break" vacation week from the school calendar because it is totally unnecessary to be off for an entire week in the middle of spring. If it is the religious holiday of Easter they are trying to honor, then have the kids off on Good Friday and the Monday after Easter.
