After Years Together, Ashburn Soccer Champs to Part Ways

Six members of the Stone Bridge High School girls varsity team have signed college commitment letters.

Several members of Stone Bridge High School’s girls varsity soccer team have clarified their plans for college by signing letters of intent. The current Bulldogs will be scattered along the East Coast from Maryland to Florida and obtaining new monikers from Gators to Rams.

All six girls have played varsity soccer since their freshman years. Three were chosen in one year for first team All-Met, a first – Murielle Tiernan, Ashley Herndon and Emily Frederickson.

Ariana Alston (Florida Atlantic University) Alston played varsity soccer since her freshman year, and has overcome a stress fracture, a major concussion and ACL surgery.

Carson Cyphers (Virginia Commonwealth University) Cyphers earned a varsity letter in her first three seasons at Stone Bridge and was a valuable contributor during and undefeated season in 2010 when the team became state champs. Cyphers was selected All-District honorable mention in 2011 and 2012, was on the Academic Honor Roll in 2010, 2011 and 2012, and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Corinne Giroux (William and Mary) As a freshman, Giroux participated on Stone Bridge’s 2010 team, which won the Liberty District Championship, the Northern Region Championship, and the AAA State Championship. During her sophomore year, Giroux was named Honorable Mention All-District. In 2012 she earned first team All-District, second team All-Region, and All-Met Honorable Mention. She has maintained a 4.0 GPA all four years at Stone Bridge.

Ashley Herndon (James Madison University) Herndon, an All-Met and All-State forward, is a dynamic scorer who owns the Stone Bridge single-game, single-season and career records for goals scored. She scored five goals in one game against South Lakes High School in 2011 and notched 29 goals in Stone Bridge’s 2010 state championship season. Her single-game record also earned her MaxPrep’s National Soccer Player of the Week honors. She scored 77 goals from 2010-2012.

During her high school career, Herndon has been named first team Washington Post All-Met, first team All-Liberty District, first team All-Northern Region and first team All-State. She was the Liberty District Co-Player of the Year in 2012.  

Emily Lung (Loyola University of Maryland) Lung was one of six freshmen to make the 2010 Stone Bridge High School varsity soccer team that went on to be undefeated that year winning the Liberty District Championship, the Northern Region Championship, and the AAA State Championship.

Murielle Tiernan (Virginia Tech) Tiernan has been a starting forward for the Bulldogs since her freshman year. She finished the season leading the team in assists, was second in goals, and was chosen first team All-District, second team All-Region and All-Met Honorable Mention.

As a sophomore, Tiernan again led the team in assists, setting a Stone Bridge record for assists in a game, with five. She was the second-leading scorer and earned first-team honors for the district and region. Tiernan was second team All-State and first team All-Met

Last year, Murielle led the team in both goals and assists, tying the school record for most assists in a single season (18). The team won the Northern Region Championship. Tiernan was chosen Liberty District Co-Player of the Year, sharing honors with Herndon. She was named first team for the District, Northern Region and All-State. She was selected by the Washington Post as the All-Met Player of the Year for 2012.
