Ashburn Boxers Bring Home Golden Gloves

Six of nine LA Boxing athletes won the bi-state tournament and move on to regionals.

A group of amateur boxers that train out of LA Boxing in Ashburn fared well this past weekend in the 2013 VA/NC Golden Gloves Tournament in Elizabeth City, NC.

Six of nine local boxers who went to the tournament came back as Golden Gloves champions. All are under the tutelage of LA Boxing’s Craig Fladager. Golden Gloves tournaments are open to boxers age 17-34.

Open Division – amateur boxers with 10 or more matches

  • Seth Billups won the Open 141 weight class
  • Eric Hernandez won the Open 152 weight class

Seth Billups is a two-time Open Class 141 Virginia State Golden Gloves Champion. Seth also won the DC Golden Gloves Novice 141 weight class title, which qualified him to compete in and win the Novice 141 Regional Golden Gloves.

Eric Hernandez has had the same success but at a younger age. Eric won the DC Silver Gloves in 2009, which allowed him to compete in the regionals and win a regional Silver Gloves. The Silver Gloves Tournament was created for young boxers between ages 8 to 16.

Masters Division ages 34 and up

Mitchell Carter won the Masters 201 weight class as an unopposed champion. Mitchell is 36 years old. The Masters Class does not advance to the regional tournament.

Novice Division –­ amateur boxers with less than ten matches.

  • Diego Abregu won the Novice* 141 weight class
  • Matt Abregu won the Novice 152* weight class
  • Charles Bright won the Novice 201* weight class

The regional tournament is set for 8 p.m. Friday, April 26, at the Waldorf Jaycees, 3090 Crain Highway, in Waldorf, MD. For ticket information call 301-843-6165.

Head out and support your local boxers. If the Open Class boxers win, they advance to the National Golden Gloves Tournament in Salt Lake City, UT.
