Ashburn Gymnasts Head to Regional Meets

Local girls were among many Chantilly Academy GymStars students to perform well at the state championships.

This past weekend, gymnasts from competed in the Virginia USA Gymnastics Level 8, 9 and 10 State Championships in Richmond.

The team brought home six State Champion titles, including All-Around State Champion. In addition, eight gymnasts qualified to compete at the Region 7 Championships for their levels to be held in May. Regionals bring together the top gymnasts from six states, including Maryland, DC, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.

Four gymnasts competing in Level 10, the highest level in USA Gymnastics’ Junior Olympic program, finished in the top three of their respective age groups. Jasmine Dockett, a senior at , captured the State Champion title in balance beam, floor exercise and all-around in the Level 10, 18-19 year-old group. In addition, Dockett placed second on uneven bars and third on vault.

Her teammate, Angelique Cross, earned the State Champion title in vault and uneven bars, while finishing second on floor and all-around behind Dockett.  Jasmine Shuey finished third on vault, balance beam, and all-around in the Level 10, 15-year-old age group and Julia McLaughlin, of Sterling, claimed State Champion on balance beam, and third place on uneven bars and all-around for the Level 10, 14-year-old age group. 

All four gymnasts have qualified to compete in the Level 10 Region 7 Championship Meet April 21-22 in Allentown, PA.

In Level 9, three gymnasts from the Chantilly Academy GymStars garnered honors at the State Championship Meet. Tricia Grywatch, of Ashburn, claimed second place on vault for 16-year-olds, Megan Riedel claimed third place on uneven bars for 17-year-olds, and Alexa Giovanis, of Sterling, claimed third place on floor exercise for 17-year-olds. All three will compete in the Level 9 Region 7 Championship Meet to be held on April 14-15 in Chesapeake, VA.

Two gymnasts in Level 8 finished in the top three. Emily Loya, of Ashburn, placed third on vault for Level 8, 14-year-olds and Olivia Norman placed third on vault and second all-around for Level 8, 13-year-olds. Norman’s all-around placement earned her a spot to compete at the Level 8 Region 7 Championship Meet in Bernville, PA, April 28-29.
