Ashburn’s Herndon Returns to United Women

The Stone Bridge standout has committed to James Madison after high school.

D.C. United Women’s soccer team this week announced the addition of four players, including Stone Bridge High School’s Ashley Herndon, who scored a goal during her five-game stint with United a year ago.

. The 17-year-old striker, who committed to James Madison University after her sophomore year, has one more year left at Stone Bridge before heading to the Dukes in the fall of 2013. Herndon played in the United Women’s season opener May 19 and managed to record two shots, but no goals.

According to a press release from the team, head coach Mike Jorden’s has Herndon near the top of his “watch list” for players with the potential for an explosive summer.

The team won its opener 2-0 over the Virginia Beach Piranhas. Mikaela Howell scored both goals. D.C. United Women next play the Northern Virginia Majestics at home at the Maryland SoccerPlex Sunday, May 27, starting at 7:45 p.m.

Herndon joins elite company. Other players the United Women announced have returned to the team include JMU’s Katie Menzie, who will be entering her senior year; Loyola goalkeeper Didi Haracic and Colorado College star Tiffany Brown.

The signings mean that the team has nine players returning from last year’s squad, which finish third in the Northeast Division. Other core players on the team, according to coach Jorden, include Marisa Abegg, Danielle Malagari, Hayley Siegel and Jerica DeWolfe.
