Babe Ruth World Series: A Primer for Baseball Tourney in Loudoun

The county will welcome the 13- to 15-year-old teams to Fireman's Field in Purcellville.

With team vying for the 2013 13-15-Year-Old Babe Ruth World Series taking fields in western Loudoun beginning Aug. 17, the Loudoun Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services provided the following information for residents and the parents.

What are the tournament dates?

Games will be held August 17-24, 2013.

Where are the games being played?

All games will be played at Fireman’s Field, 250 Nursery Avenue, Purcellville, VA 20132.

 

When do teams arrive?

Teams arrive on August 15 and activities for coaches, league officials and players begin onAugust 16.

 

Where will players and coaches stay while in Loudoun?

Tournament officials and coaches will stay at the Best Western in Leesburg, VA.  Players will be staying in hotels/motels in the surrounding area. They will not be staying with host families as during previous World Series tournaments held in Loudoun.

 

When is the opening banquet?

The banquet will be held Friday, August 16, at 6:30 p.m. at Loudoun Valley High School, 340 North Maple Ave., Purcellville, VA. Master of Ceremonies will be Loudoun Hounds President & CEO Bob Farren. The public can attend the banquet, but seating is very limited. The cost is $25 per person.  Information about banquet tickets is available at www.loudounbrws.com .

 

When is the opening ceremony?

The opening ceremony takes place on Saturday, August 17, at 9:00 a.m. at Fireman’s Field. Games begin at 11:00 a.m.

 

When will the tribute to Don Rose, Sr. take place?

A tribute to the former Babe Ruth Virginia State Commissioner  is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on  August 17 at Fireman’s Field.

 

How many teams are playing?

Ten teams play in the tournament.  A pool play format is used.  There will be two divisions of five teams each. Each team will play four games in their own division. The top two teams in each division will play a single game elimination tournament to determine the championship.

 

What local teams are playing?

The 2013 series includes the Virginia State Championship team from Vienna, VA and host team, the Greater Loudoun Lions. A schedule of games is available at www.loudounbrws.com.

 

Will the tournament include a Home Run Derby?

A Home Run Derby will be played prior to the 8 p.m. game on August 18, 19, 20 and 21.

 

When will press passes be available?

Press passes for media representatives with credentials will be available at the ticket booth at Fireman’s Field beginning August 17. Media representatives are invited to sit in the field-level press box. Limited parking will be available at Fireman’s Field.

 

Where can media get more information?

The tournament headquarters at Fireman’s Field will be staffed beginning August 16.  Updated game information and scores will be posted to www.loudounbrws.com. The phone number for messages will be 540-338-0012.

What is the cost of a tournament pass?

Tournament passes cost $25 for an individual and $45 for a family (up to four members). Daily tickets cost $7.  Children under the age of six are admitted free.  Daily admission and tournament passes will be sold at Fireman’s Field beginning August 17.


Where does the public park for the tournament?

The public is asked to park at Loudoun Valley High School, 340 N. Maple Avenue, Purcellville. Parking is free and free shuttle buses, including accessible buses, will run continuously beginning one hour before each game until one hour after the conclusion of the last game.  Additional weekend and evening parking will be available at Loudoun Valley Community, 320 W. School Street, Purcellville.
