Betties and Vixens, Offense Intended

NOVA Roller Derby's top-ranked team takes on a group of veterans and rookies making its officials debut.

Anyone interested in watching angry skaters taking out their aggressions on one another might want to head over to the Dulles SportsPlex Saturday when NOVA Roller Derby’s top-ranked Vineyard Vixens take on the Beltway Betties.

The bout starts at 5:30 p.m. at the SportsPlex, 21610 Atlantic Boulevard, in Sterling. Doors open at 4:30 p.m.

Team captain Loudoun Dirty leads the Vixens against the upstart Betties, which boasts a mix of veterans and energetic rookies.

The league follows Modern Athletic Derby Endeavor (M.A.D.E.)—a national affiliation of leagues promoting fair, skilled competition—guidelines.

Afterwards, meet the skaters at the Greene Turtle, 21035 Dulles Town Circle, at the Dulles Town Center, for a “derby de Mayo” post-bout celebration.

In May, NOVA Roller Derby is working with Mission Sleep, a nonprofit organization that provides free, overnight newborn care and education to military moms whose husbands are deployed or wounded when the baby (or babies) arrives. During the month, the league will sell raffle tickets for a 64GB Apple iPad2 with Wi-Fi and black leather case. All raffle proceeds and additional cash donations benefit Mission Sleep.
