Johnson, Tate Shine in Ashburn Holiday Basketball Tournament

Broad Run goes undefeated to claim local bragging rights among schools in our community.

Local hoops fans enjoyed a display of scoring firepower from Broad Run's Nigel Johnson and Briar Woods' Myles Tate during this week's 4th annual Honda of Dulles Holiday Basketball Tournament. The talented guards started the tournament hot, each torching Stone Bridge for 30 points to lead their teams to wins and set the stage for a showdown in the tournament's final game.

In Thursday night's final, Johnson got the better of Tate and the Falcons (6-1) to claim local bragging rights, at least for now. Johnson seemed a step ahead of the Falcon defense for most of the night, as he weaved and drove to the hoop constantly, drawing a bevy of fouls en route to a 27-point game. Tate and the Falcons started the game slowly, but made a third-quarter run before the Spartans (8-3) pulled away for the 58-45 win. Tate finished the game with 16 points. The Ashburn rivals square off again on Feb. 1 at Broad Run.

Johnson earned two game MVP awards during the tournament, while Tate took home an MVP prize of his own.

Although Stone Bridge (3-6) was unable to tally a win during the tournament, strong poerformances from Mike Hamrick, Myles Johnson and Jonathan Allen may help the Bulldogs get on track for the rest of the season.
