Broad Run Boys Head to Briar Woods for Ashburn Lacrosse Bragging Rights

After defeating Stone Bridge last week, the Falcons look to claim the mantel among Ashburn teams.

Last week, the "Battle of Ashburn," lacrosse-style, began.

Wednesday night, March 14, the boys team played the Bulldogs at . The Falcons hoped to redeem their loss from a year earlier when Stone Bridge beat them 10-7. However, the Bulldogs took an early 6-1 lead and appeared on the verge of a blowout.

Junior Dylan Maltz and senior goalie Jesse Southward led Stone Bridge. But the well-balanced offense—including Justin Little, Kevin Cuellar and Connor Cashman—steadied Briar Woods assisted by the strong defensive work of Sean McMinn and Sam Fisher, and Shane Brennan in goal. It proved to be a slugfest.

By halftime, the Falcons had gone on a scoring run of their own, pulling to within 2 goals at 7-5. At the end of the third, the teams were tied at 10. From there, the fight continued, with teams trading scores for the rest of the night. Six different players scored for Briar Woods, led by senior Justin Little with five goals. Kevin Cuellar had four, while Connor Cashman scored three times. Cashman also helped out with a career-high eight assists. Meanwhile, Maltz kept the Bulldogs in the game with nine of Stone Bridge's 15 goals.

At the end of regulation the teams were tied 15-15.

Briar Woods won the face-off in the sudden-death overtime period. Cashman made a quick pass to Justin Little who sealed the win, bringing Briar Woods’ regular season record to 2-0. The team also won its two preseason scrimmages. After losing on March 16 to Robinson Secondary, Stone Bridge started its season 0-2.

The Briar Woods and Stone Bridge JV teams also played March 14, with the Falcons winning 6-3. Goalie Matt Davis made some key saves in the game to keep Briar Woods on top, while Chris Wiger, Sean Little and Neal Barron in that game’s scoring.

Ashburn lacrosse will continue to battle it out March 21 when travels to Briar Woods. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.
