Broad Run Girls Eclipse Park View

After slow start, Spartan 5-goal explosion leads to decisive victory.

Just last week, the Broad Run girls soccer team lost its first district game since 2007 to crosstown rival Briar Woods. And, for the first 33 minutes of Friday night's matchup with Park View, it looked as if the Spartans might be headed for another loss.

The upstart Patriots, currently in sixth place in the Dulles District, kept Broad Run on its heels with tenacious pressure on defense, rarely letting the Spartans slip past midfield. Park Views' ball control resulted in several scoring opportunities early, but they were unable to capitalize.

But last in the first half, the team began showing the type of firepower that helped them win the last three AA state championships. The Spartans scored on two breakaway goals and netted a third in the final seven minutes of the first half. Adding two more goals in the second half, Broad Run ran away with a 5-0 victory. Cassie Smith led the Spartans with two goals, while Erin Brady, Whitney Church, and Ellie Zoepfl each tallied a score as well.
