Broad Run Scores in Soccer, Baseball; Falcons Slip, but Advance in Softball

The Spartan teams win regional championships; Briar Woods softball moves on to state playoffs despite loss.

The Broad Run Spartans continued their barnstorming tour through the Region II playoffs Friday night, with both the boys and girls soccer teams claiming regional titles and the baseball team advancing to today's regional final.

Tim Chapman led the Spartans with two goals as the team cruised to a resounding 3-0 home win over Tuscarora, while Ellie Zoepfl once again led the Lady Spartans with two goals and an assist in the team's 5-1 victory over Woodgrove. Both teams advance to this week's VHSL AA state tournament.

The Spartan's baseball team had to rally from a 6-1 deficit against Kettle Run to claim an 11-7 home win and advance to the Region II final Saturday. Starting pitcher A.J. Powell atoned for the seven runs he gave up on the mound with a two-run homerun, and Joe Delhaba added a two-run dinger of his own to help the Spartans overcome some untypically shaky pitching. Regardless of Saturday's outcome, the Spartans will advance to the state tournament on Tuesday with the time and location to be determined.

Briar Woods was not as fortunate in the Region II softball championship game, falling in a 5-2 match with Woodgrove. The Falcons were their own worst enemy as they committed a season-high four errors and left twelve runners stranded on base. Even with the loss the Falcons will play in Tuesday's VHSL AA state quarterfinal game when they visit Region I champion Powhatan. The Falcons lost to Powhatan 4-0 in last year's state quarterfinal game.
