Broadlands Resident Wins Infinitive Sprint Triathlon

Swimming, running and bicycling to benefit the March of Dimes.

Before most of people rolled out of bed this past Sunday morning, more than 200 triathletes from across the region were wide awake, participating in the 4th Annual Infinitive Sprint Triathlon in Broadlands. The Infinitive Triathlon is a great race for first-timers but also provides a fun, challenging course for those with a few races under their belt.

At 7 a.m., the first two triathletes entered the Broadlands outdoor pool to begin their 400-meter swim. Following the swim, competitors headed to the transition area to prepare for their 12-mile bike ride, which was a double-loop course on the roads of Ashburn with a nice little downhill section that felt almost like flying to some racers!

After a quick transition into running gear, the athletes finished the race with a 3.1-mile run, which ended back at the Broadlands pool, with a great celebration and post-race yummies. Crowds of people lined the course throughout Ashburn neighborhoods and cheered on the athletes as they gave it all they had to finish the race strong.

“We’ve work hard to put on a top-notch race year after year...it just keeps getting better and I’m proud to organize an event that showcases our great community and brings families out for a bit of exercise and a lot of fun ... all while raising money for a good cause,” said Kathleen McFarlane, race coordinator.

The Infinitive Sprint Triathlon is recognized as a great community event in Ashburn. Racers come back year after year to be a part of the still growing sprint tri. Started in 2008 by Denis and Kathleen McFarlane, the Infinitive Sprint Tri has the honor of being the first triathlon event in Loudoun County.

After a successful first year, Kathleen McFarlane founded Kat Mac Events, an event planning company that organizes local fitness events. Denis McFarlane, CEO of Infinitive, sponsors the June sprint triathlon year, which has become one of the company’s annual community service events. Proceeds from the Infinitive Sprint Tri are donated to the National Capital Area Chapter of the March of Dimes, an organization the McFarlanes and Infinitive work closely with throughout the year.

“We are delighted to see the Infinitive Sprint Triathlon continue to grow in numbers each year and appreciate the opportunity to bring our employees out to be a part of such a well-organized fun event,” Denis McFarlane said.

Orange volunteer shirts worn by employees and family members of Infinitive line the streets of Ashburn. Other volunteer groups included the March of Dimes, Team TPR, the largest triathlon team in Ashburn, and campaign workers for Del. Thomas A. “Tag” Greason (R-32), who give the signal to start the race.

After the race, Team TPR claimed several top podium spots, including 1st, 2nd and 3rd place overall, 1st overall female, three 1st place age group awards, two 2nd place age group awards, and three 3rd place age group awards. , age 43, of Broadlands, was the overall winner finishing the race at 1:00:26. Top female honors went to Leanne McAllister, who has quickly become the woman to beat at both the Infinitive and Dog Days Sprint Triathlons!

Participants may race as individuals or relay teams. Corporate teams may also register and compete in the series against other teams. KatMac Events’ next triathlon in Ashburn, the Dog Days of Summer Triathlon takes place Aug. 7.
