Join Crossroads United Methodist Church and the Ashburn community for the 17th Annual Ashburn Farm Thanksgiving Day Race, Thursday, November 25, 2010 with an 8:15 AM start time. In this annual fundraising event, hundreds of people have gathered for a time of fun, fellowship, and a good cause to run the 10k, 5k or Fun Run throughout the neighboring streets of Ashburn. All proceeds from this race support the needy and vulnerable children at HUMBLE School, in Lukojjo Village, Uganda, Africa.
On-line registration is open at www.active.com now through November 23. Paper registration can be downloaded at www.ecrossroadsumc.org and returned to Crossroads United Methodist Church located at 43454 Crossroads Dr. Ashburn, VA. Walk-in registrations are accepted at Crossroads United Methodist Church now through Thursday morning, November 25th (Race Day). All registered runners will receive a 100% long sleeve t-shirt and have the option to upgrade to a performance t-shirt. 10k and 5k course are relatively flat and are sanctioned by USATF. Maps are available at www.ecrossroads.org
Uganda is a sub-Saharan African nation of about 32 million people. Due to illness such as HIV/AIDS and malaria and a 20 year conflict in Northern Uganda there are over 2 million orphans and one-half of the population is below the age of 15. One-third to one-half live in poverty with close to forty percent living without access to clean water.
HUMBLE School was a result of Crossroads' first International Mission trip in 1999 when a young father from Ashburn connected with a young father in Uganda and together had a vision for HUMBLE School as a home and school to needy and vulnerable children. Crossroads United Methodist Church partnered with the Uganda United Methodist Church to build and now operate HUMBLE School. A primary school, HUMBLE opened in 2004 with classes Nursery through Primary 4, then each of the three following years was able to add one additional class through the proceeds of the Ashburn 10k/5k and the work of Cross Roads United Methodist Church. In 2007 HUMBLE saw its first graduation class of children all due to the support of local runners contributing to the Ashburn Farm Thanksgiving Day 10k/5k event.
Since 2004 all race proceeds have gone to support the children of HUMBLE School including those who have graduated and continue their secondary education. Since 2008, race proceeds fully support secondary students, continue to supplement funding for operations of HUMBLE school, and provide for projects including a perimeter safety wall built in 2009, and water borne toilets and showers from the 2010 proceeds. Come run for the HUMBLE School cause!
