Falcons Fall in Semifinals

Boys torched by Woodgrove's Brad Gilson, while girls team can't keep pace with LoCo.

Two days after upsetting second-seed Broad Run in the Dulles District quarterfinals, the Woodgrove Wolverine's boys basketball team continued their barnstorming tour of Ashburn by knocking off number three seed Briar Woods 68-52.

Despite trailing by just one point at halftime, the Falcons had no answers for Woodrove's Brad Gilson in the second half. Gilson, the Dulles District co-Player of the Year, nailed four 3-pointers in the third quarter to spur a Wolverine run from which the Falcons never recovered. Gilson finished the game with 32 points, including five 3-pointers and 15 of 16 free throws.

Myles Tate hit four 3-pointers of his own for the Falcons, and finished the game with 23 points (check out the video highlights). But Tate was the only Briar Woods player to reach double figures in scoring, and his efforts were not enough to keep pace with Gilson and the Wolverines. The loss drops Briar Woods to 15-9 on the season. With the win, Woodgrove advances to Friday night's district championship game at home against defending state champs Potomac Falls.

Over in Leesburg, the Briar Woods girls suffered a similarly inglorious night, losing to top-seed Loudoun County 74-51. Logan Ballard and Brittany Gilbert combined for 26 points for the Falcons, but it wasn't enough to keep pace with Loudoun County's high-powered offense, which had four players in double digits, including Brittany Batts' game-high 24 points. The loss drops the Falcons to 13-11 on the season.

Both Briar Woods teams play in the district consolation games Thursday night at Woodgrove High School. The girls take on Potomac Falls at 6 p.m., while the boys play Park View at 7:45. The consolation games will have implications for seeding in the regional playoffs.
