Football Preview: TJ at Stone Bridge

The Bulldogs look to continue the momentum of recent weeks.

GAME TIME: 7:30 p.m. at Stone Bridge

Last Friday proved to be memorable evening at Stone Bridge High School, despite Broad Run’s 24-0 halftime lead. But in front of a packed house and spurred by a momentum-changing goal-line stand in the third quarter, the Bulldogs battled back to tie the game, force overtime, eventually capture a thrilling 31-30 victory.

Every week seems to get more exciting for Ashburn high school football fans, and this week should be no different as Stone Bridge hosts Thomas Jefferson High School.

Head coach Mickey Thompson must help his team avoid a letdown after last week's huge comeback victory. This week, the Bulldogs host the Thomas Jefferson Colonials. TJ – a science and technology magnet school in Fairfax County that is routinely voted as one of the best high schools in America academically – enters the game after a tough loss, a 35-37 nail-biter against the J.E.B. Stuart Raiders.

The Colonials boast a capable running game, with running back Patrick O'Connor leading the team on the ground. But much like Herndon, the Colonials lack an effective passing game.

The big issue facing the Bulldogs this season is consistency. Which team will show up for them? Last week's first-half team that couldn't move the ball and gave up lots of big plays, or the second half team that rallied for an improbable win? The key for the Bulldogs will be avoiding turnovers, which have plagued them at times this season.

Prediction: Athletically Stone Bridge will have a significant advantage over the Colonials, and even if the offense struggles, the Bulldog defense can probably win this game on their own. Stone Bridge 24 Jefferson 3.
