Get Your Swing Started Right in 2011

Rotation and balance are key to setting up your backswing.

Two things needed in every golf swing are balance and range of motion. These are critical to work on, especially after a long lay-off in winter months.

To get a fuller shoulder and chest turn, start your swing with your right shoulder (reverse these tips for lefties). The next time you are in front of a mirror try this drill: Facing the mirror, get into your golf posture then fold your arms out in front of you with your arms parallel to the ground, similar to Barbara Eden in “I Dream of Jeanie.”

From here, start pulling your right shoulder back; most golfers will be able to pull/rotate far enough that their left shoulder is over their right leg at the finish of the backswing. Starting with your right shoulder also helps keep your balance over your feet. If helpful, you can also think of a baseball player at bat. He will pull back with his right shoulder, which turns his chest at the start of the swing.

Now get into the same starting position with the arms folded parallel to the ground and start your swing with the left shoulder. You will notice that you will not be able to turn your chest nearly as far and you may notice your weight going towards ball of your left feet. If your left shoulder goes down at the start of the backswing you may feel stuck.

Remember, for a better turn and better balance, start your swing with your right shoulder.
