Golf Tip of the Month: Indoor Swing Practice

Try this towel drill during the winter months for better ball striking in the spring.

Being winter, many of golfers are working on their swings indoors. Last month, I provided several putting drills that you could practice to improve your game. This month, we look at an indoor drill to work on better ball striking.

All you need for this drill is a small towel and a standard letter envelope. Place the envelope on the ground and have it point toward an imaginary target. The end of the envelope would be where your golf ball would be. Now place a towel on the ground six- to 10-inches behind the ball.

Practice making swings where you miss the towel and then make contact with the edge of the envelope. This will ensure you are making contact with the ball on a downward strike. Setting up to the envelope will also help you with alignment and help train your eyes to see a square clubface. As you approach impact, you will also be working on squaring the clubface.

To be successful at this drill, make sure your hands are leading the club head into impact. You must also shift your weight to your left side to get into a good impact position. Imagine your shirt buttons and zipper are moving to the target side of the ball.

Practice this drill with 30 to 40 practice swings a day. Come springtime, your position at impact should be better. As you get better at this drill, keep moving the towel closer to the ball.

Wishing you a good practice and solid ball strikes!
