Ashburn High Schools Faring Well in Playoffs

No matter the time of year, Ashburn high school sports teams seem destined for success once the playoffs begin. This spring is no exception as Broad Run, Briar Woods, and Stone Bridge all had teams advance this week during the various district and regional playoffs across town. Some highlights include: 

• The Briar Woods boys lacrosse team knocked off Western Albermarle 10-6 to advance to the regional final against E.C. Glass Friday in Lynchburg (check out the Patch video highlight compilation). The win came with backup goalie Thomas Harrigan having to step in for the Falcons all-everything goalie Matt Bukovac, who went down with an injury. Briar Woods Coach Bruce Lipson credited Harrigan as the key to their victory. Check out Lipson's complete postgame video interview.
• Ashley Herndon continued her scoring ways by leading Stone Bridge to a 2-0 win over South County, including a great header caught on video by Ashburn Patch. The Bulldogs controlled the ball for much of the game and were never truly threatened in the physical contest. Unfortunately, the boys team was not as fortunate, as they lost 2-1 to W.T. Woodson.
• Broad Run knocked off cross-town rival Briar Woods 4-1 in a Dulles District baseball showdown. Chuck Moore captured a ton of great shots, including Victor Rizzardi's fantastic leaping grab into the wall.
• Broad Run boys and girls soccer both advanced in their district tournament matches, with the boys knocking off Tuscarora 2-0 and the girls blistering Freedom to the tune of 5-1. Cassie Smith closed out the scoring for the Lady Spartans with a goal caught nearly frame-by-frame by Chuck  Moore.
