National Jousting Championship to be Held in Aldie

65 Jousters will compete for the coveted title of "national champion" on Saturday.

Calling all Lords and Ladies, the National Jousting Tournament will commence at 10:00am on Saturday, Oct. 9, in Aldie. The sport that was widely popular in medieval times is still practiced today. This weekend, 65 competitors in four categories: novice, amateur, semi-professional and professional, will compete for the title of "National Jousting Champion."

The annual event draws horse enthusiasts, families and curious spectators from the East Coast and Southern Region.

For those who have not experienced a live jousting tournament, prepare for bursting speed and thrills. Competitors' ages range from 4 to 80. The jouster mounts his horse, lance in hand and attempts to employ his best horsemanship and hand-eye coordination. As the horse runs down the stretch, quickly approaching the ring, the jouster must line up his lance in an effort to penetrate a one and a half inch hole.  The competitor who clears the most rings is declared the winner.

Saturday's event is free and open to the public. Mona Banton, President of the National Jousting Association, suggests that spectators be prepared for a lack of vendors on site.

"Bring a picnic lunch and a chair and make a day of it," she said.
