Rivalry Weekend for Briar Woods and Broad Run

Briar Woods girls stun Broad Run in soccer and softball, while Spartan boys best Falcons

It was a hectic couple of days for Ashburn high school sports, as teams scrambled to squeeze in games between bouts of rain and thunderstorms. Luckily, the weather broke long enough for Briar Woods and Broad Run to take part in a round of rivalries Friday in Ashburn on the soccer field and on the diamond.

In the shocker of the weekend – and reminiscent of last year’s varsity football rivalry – the Briar Woods girls soccer team knocked off three-time defending state champion Broad Run. The Lady Spartans had been riding an unbeaten streak since 2007 when Briar Woods sophomore Shell Davis pulled off a two-goal game to lead the visiting Falcons to the noteworthy 2-1 win on the road. With the loss, the Spartans (8-1 overall and in the district) drop to second place in the Dulles District, while the Falcons (6-3-1, 5-3-1) inch closer to playoff contention.

In boys soccer, the Spartans toppled the overmatched Falcons in a 5-0 routing that has left Broad Run with 9-0 record up to this point, while the Falcons drop to 1-8-1.

The Broad Run baseball team overcame a 4-1 deficit and scrambled back to claim an 8-4 Dulles District victory over Briar Woods Friday. The win helped the Spartans maintain a commanding lead in the district at 11-1, including an unblemished 9-0 record in the district. The Falcons fell to 7-7 overall and 6-3 in district play.

In softball, Briar Woods pulled away late to claim a resounding 5-1 victory over Broad Run. The Falcons exploded for all five of their runs in the decisive sixth inning, with Lynn Brantley, Kacie Kondrotis, and Caroline Fowler all driving in scores. The win improved the Falcons to 9-3 overall and 7-3 in the district, while the Spartans dropped to 10-3 and 7-2.
