Spartan Girls Beat Falcons 3-1 in Soccer Playoff

Broad Run now moves on to regional semifinal; seeks shot at state tournament.

The Broad Run girls varsity soccer team overcame an early score by Briar Woods’ Lina Granados Tuesday night to defeat the Falcons 3-1 and earn a slot in Thursday’s semifinal.

Despite the Falcons’ goal just 5 minutes into the game, the Spartans firmed up and Whitney Church placed a corner kick in the perfect spot for Cassie Smith to head one past the Briar Woods goalie and tie the game 1-1 in the 27th minute (See photo sequence).

Later in the game, Dani Dangremond handled a perfect pass from Ellie Zoepfl, beat an onrushing goalie and pushed the ball into the back of the net, giving Broad Run 2-1 lead. Church and Zoepfl teamed up for a final goal late in the 2nd half, putting the game out of reach for Briar Woods.
