Stone Bridge and Briar Woods Keep Rolling

Bulldogs grind out win over Langley, while the Falcons dust Woodgrove.

The Briar Woods and Stone Bridge football teams showed no ill-effects from having to play on Thursday night instead of Friday this week: both teams captured big shut-out victories and continue to cruise through their respective district schedules.

The Bulldogs took on the Langley Saxons in McLean, with the hopes of keeping pace with Fairfax and Madison at the top of the Liberty District standings. The Saxons kept things close through three quarters of play, and were driving for a possible score that would have cut the Bulldog lead to seven points. Then Mike Tompkins picked off a Nick Casso pass and returned it 99 yards for a Bulldog touchdown. The score and extra point increased the Bulldog lead to 21-0 and killed the Saxons momentum.

The Bulldogs closed out the scoring with a 27-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Burns to Stan Johnson in the fourth quarter. Next week the team faces Marshall (1-5), a struggling team that gave a scare to district-leading Fairfax this week in a 28-21 overtime loss.

Back in Loudoun County, Briar Woods traveled to Purcellville and put a hurting on the home team Wolverines. The Falcons raced out to a 36-0 halftime lead-on touchdowns from Cory Colder, Connor Cashman, Joe Rizzardi and Trace McSorley. Cashman is proving to be a home run threat for the Falcons, as his two first half scores came on a 61-yard punt return and a 54-yard run from scrimmage. McSorley had an up and down night at quarterback, throwing two interceptions and losing a fumble but scoring two rushing touchdowns to help lead the Falcons to the 50-0 win.

Once again the Briar Woods defense was dominant, holding Woodgrove to just 54 total yards. Linebackers Matt Rolin and Brandon Brown each recorded 13 tackles, with Rolin also notching two sacks. Defensive lineman Trei Germany chipped in with 11 tackles and a sack for the Falcons.

Next week Briar Woods will take on the high-scoring passing attack of the Heritage Pride (5-1), with a share of the Dulles District lead on the line.
