Stone Bridge and Briar Woods Win ... Again

Different week, same story for Bulldogs and Falcons as they inch closer to district titles.

The Stone Bridge and Briar Woods football teams continued their winning ways Friday night, running away with blowout victories over district opponents once again.

Briar Woods 45, Freedom 3
The Falcons relied on a smothering defensive effort and a sterling performance by quarterback Trace McSorley to manhandle the Freedom-South Riding Eagles. The defense performed remarkably against the Freedom running game, holding the Eagles to minus 47 yards rushing. Even more amazing: six differrent Eagle players attempted a rush during the game, and not a single one was able to net positive yardage. The Eagles "leading" rusher, Derek Burns, carried seven times and lost one yard. Joe Rizzardi led the Falcon defenders with three tackles for a loss and two sacks.

On offense, McSorley racked up 210 yards passing and threw touchdowns to Alex Carter, Matt Rolin and Cam Serigne for the Falcons. McSorley has thrown seven touchdowns in his past two games with just one interception. Carter added an interception return for a touchdown, while Connor Cashman and Cory Colder had rushing scores to round out the Falcons' touchdown onslaught. Briar Woods has scored at least 45 points in six of the team's last seven games.

The Falcons travel to Loudoun Valley next week for their next to last regular season game.

Stone Bridge 38, McLean 6
The Bulldogs (7-1, 5-0) had similar success against the McLean Highlanders (4-4, 2-3), cruising to a Liberty District road win. Ryan Burns threw four touchdown passes and Stephen Trivieri recorded his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season, tallying 178 yards on 21 carries. Stan Johnson, Burns' favorite target, hauled in eight passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns.
