Stone Bridge Downs Jefferson to Reach Semifinals
Top-seeded Bulldogs face hot McLean team for spot in district championship game.
After finishing the season with the best record in the Liberty District, the Stone Bridge Bulldogs looked every bit like the district's best team during a 55-38 win at home over Thomas Jefferson Tuesday night. Paced by another double-double from super-sophomore Murielle Tiernan, the Bulldogs advanced to the district semifinals where they face a tough McLean squad that beat the Bulldogs in overtime in their last matchup.
Tiernan finished the game with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Cori Prince added 10 points and Hannah Beth Whitaker contributed 6 points and seven rebounds. Even in victory the Bulldogs had a tough time stopping Jefferson senior Shannon Eriksson. Eriksson, who was voted the Liberty District's Most Outstanding player this season, finished with a game-high 18 points.
Stone Bridge head coach Chris Jones knows the semifinal showdown with McLean will be no easy task, as the Bulldogs and Highlanders have proven they might be the two most evenly matched teams in the area.

"Our last four games [against McLean] have gone to overtime, so we expect that kind of game this time," said Jones. "It's obvious McLean's been playing the best basketball of anyone in the tournament, so we'll have our work cut out for us."
Despite the tough opponent, Coach Jones and the Bulldogs remain confident heading into the next game.

"Our girls know if we come out and play like we can we should be right in there at the end, and hopefully we'll have a chance for the win," he said.
The Bulldogs will take on McLean this Thursday at 5:45 p.m. at South Lakes High School in Reston. Good luck Bulldogs!
