Stone Bridge Softball Standouts Sign Scholarships

Cori Prince and Beth Lewis set their sites on collegiate ball at GMU, Wagner.

The Stone Bridge High School library suspended its silence policy for a ceremony Friday celebrating the scholarship signing of two of the schools’ top athletes. Seniors Cori Prince and Beth Lewis were all smiles as they sat before their friends and teammates to share a moment few students ever achieve – each earned a college scholarship.

Both girls will play college softball next year, with Prince staying local at George Mason University and while Lewis heads to the Big Apple and Wagner College. But first, they have one last season with Stone Bridge, and the coaches seem happy to keep them one more year.

Head Coach Richard Sullivan said the accomplishments were well deserved. He said he still remembers the two showing up for tryouts.

“We were like, man, they’re going to be something special,” an obviously emotional Sullivan recalled. “They’ve lived up to all we thought they would be, both as students and athletes. We have just been proud to be their coaches.”

While the neither restricted herself to softball, that’s the sport that landed their scholarships.

Lewis is a two-time all-district player who won a 2009 all-district tournament team honor. She also has earned three scholar athlete awards for maintaining a 3.5 GPA or higher. Her .400+ batting average helped her lead the team with RBI during the past two years. Lewis earned a .998 fielding average, who, as catcher, threw out 43 percent of the runners attempting to steal while maintained home plate.

“Beth has really been a big leader here,” Sullivan said. “Cori has been right there with her.”

Prince was named all-district player three times and received a 2010 all-district team honor. She also is a three-year scholar athlete. Prince led the team with stolen bases and runs scored during the past three years. She earned a .375+ batting average and a .974 fielding average.

Congratulations Beth and Cori!
