Years-long Baseball Pursuit Continues to Tease Loudoun

Hounds strike out for 2014; residents wonder when stadium work will begin.

It became clear this week that even a season playing at a borrowed baseball stadium would not happen for the Loudoun Hounds in 2014.

Teams participating in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball Clubs released their 2014 schedules with no sign of the Loudoun Hounds. Last month month, team representatives expressed hope that arrangements could be made to play at another ballpark since work has yet to begin on the Hounds stadium at One Loudoun.

The Loudoun Board of Supervisors earlier this year expedited the land use reviews necessary to approve the stadium to keep the team on schedule for 2014. That came after the team bailed on initial plans to build the ballpark at Kincora because of delays there. VIP had initially expressed hope that it would field a team in 2012.

Loudoun Hounds spokesman David D’Onofrio declined to comment Friday when asked when the team would start.

Baseball has been a lure for Loudoun for years. In the early 2000s, an ownership group made an unsuccessful bid on what became the Washington Nationals; their plans called for a stadium in Loudoun off off Route 28.

The Virginia Cavalry FC, an expansion team with the North American Soccer League, is also expected to play at the proposed stadium.
