Living Fit and Healthy - My Story

Sometimes it takes dealing with hard times to find your true passion. That's exactly how I found mine. With commitment, support and effort, I became strong and fit.

I started blogging years ago in one form or another but really found my voice about three years ago. That’s when my husband was diagnosed with stage 2 colon cancer. He had no family history of colon cancer and at 37, he was younger than statistics say he should be.  Our life became a whirlwind of hospitals, doctors, questions and advice. It was then that I started blogging regularly to keep everyone informed about what was going on, and to avoid having to recount every detail over and over again. Quite frankly, it was easier on me.

About a month before the diagnosis, I also came to the realization that I was not happy with the way I was leading my life. I was not living healthy. I didn’t look my best and felt sluggish and out of shape. I hadn’t exercised regularly in years and it just felt like it was time to get serious.  I joined a local boot camp program and began what would eventually become a passion.  Growing up, I was never athletic; think the last one to be picked for any gym team. I even told the trainer during my first week that I was the definition of “uncoordinated.” But, with time, effort and commitment, all that changed… I am a strong, fit, coordinated athlete now and found a true passion for health and fitness.

I also think it’s important to share that I’m an average person. I do not have a personal chef. I am not famous. I have the same pressures many others have – two young kids, a husband, a full time job.  And to top it all off, we fought a major health issue and had no family nearby to help.  My point is simple -- there are no secrets or tricks to make this happen.  If I can make a commitment to live healthy and fit, anyone can.

I believe that life takes you places for a reason, and it’s up to you follow. I needed to be mentally and physically prepared to overcome the threat that cancer presented to my family, and finding my fitness did that for me.  What’s more is both experiences have taught me how strong I can be – physically, mentally, and spiritually and has led me to find my passion.

This July, my husband will be 3 years cancer free and will officially be considered ‘in remission’, so while the surgery, chemo and the challenges we faced were tough, we have moved forward and now have the benefit of perspective.

My blogging has evolved over the years and is now focused on living fit and healthy and all that goes along with that journey. I share my experience and commitment to live a healthier lifestyle in hopes that it inspires and supports those that are looking to find a better way to live their own lives.

Sometimes it takes dealing with hard times to find your true passion. Whatever your path, I hope that what I share will give you the inspiration and support that you need to join me on this crazy, windy, and sometimes foggy path to healthy living.
