Staying Cool on the Fourth

As the power companies work through the holiday, tips to beat the heat.

While Loudoun County government offices will be closed July 4 for the Independence Day holiday, some county facilities will be open to provide respite from the heat for those who are without power or need relief from the extremely hot weather. The facilities and times of operation are:

Showers

  • Shower facilities at the Franklin Park Pool, 17501 Franklin Park Drive, Purcellville, VA 20132, will be available from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Shower facilities at the Lovettsville Pool, 57 E. Broad Way, Lovettsville, VA 20180, will be available from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Shower facilities at the Claude Moore Recreation Center, 46105 Loudoun Park Lane, Sterling, VA 20164, will be available from 9 a.m. to 12 noon

Cooling Centers

  • Claude Moore Park Visitor Center, 21544 Old Vestal's Gap Road, Sterling, VA 20164: 9 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. 
  • Middleburg Library, 101 Reed Street, Middleburg, VA 20117, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Phil Bolen Park Conference Room, 42405 Claudia Drive, Leesburg, VA 20175,   8 a.m. to dusk

Tips for staying cool include:

  • Stay in air-conditioned rooms
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Replace salt and minerals
  • Wear appropriate clothing and sunscreen
  • Schedule outdoor activities carefully
  • Pace yourself
  • Monitor people at high risk
  • Do not leave children or pets in cars
  • Check on relatives and neighbors
  • Use common sense

The latest information on the county government’s efforts to recover from the storm will be online at www.loudoun.gov.

For those cleaning up, the Loudoun landfill has also geared up to receive storm-related debris.
