Great Boston style fish and chips. And love one of their appetizers, the best deviled eggs I've ever had with candied bacon. Yum. Never had a bad experience there. One minor quibble for me - I like having combos, such as fish and shrimp, and they don't do that. Still, its a place I have driven far out of my way for, and will again. Highly recommended.

Ok, I returned to FFS again. This time, I had the fish tacos (as many of my friends raved about them), and they were awesome. I held the taco sauce, since it had mayonnaise in it (and I can't stand mayo), and I thought the meal was perfect. The fish tacos were made of blackened and lightly seasoned cod, which hit the right notes. My friend and I shared an appetizer of 12 fresh oysters. The oysters were great, and I thought the James River oysters deserved a special nod b/c they weren't as salty as the other brands. Overall, FFS does a phenomenal job with seafood. LOVE it!
Although I thought the food scored 5 stars, but I still rated FFS with 4 stars due to the wait time. My friend and I were seated immediately at the rail (not a table b/c we couldn't wait 30 minutes), and service was very slow (b/c it was a packed house). We were there about 2 hours, which is an hour longer than acceptable for a business lunch.
I've been to Ford's Fish Shack twice. Now, the positives....The ambiance and decor is fantastic; you really feel like you're in Cape Cod. Our waitstaff was friendly and helpful. My crabcake sandwich was generously sized and tasty-- tons of meat and light on the breading. I considered the pricing to range from fair to high. $14 for a great crabcake sandwich is reasonable; $14 for a salad is not.
Now for the negatives...The restaurant is very small and doesn't have many tables. Due to the surge in interest, Ford's always packed, so be prepared to wait. My first visit, I waited 30 minutes; my second visit, my wait was over an hour. Even though the service is friendly, the service is also very slow. My friend had fish tacos and I had a crabcake sandwich; we waited 45 minutes for our food.
Given the fact that the food was excellent, I'm willing to try FFS again. It would be nice if the owner would do something about the long lines and slow service.
I've been here and food is great but was there last night for dinner at the bar and service was not that great. We ordered a salad along with the excellent mussels and it never arrived! So by the time our food was arriving we asked bartender to cancel it. She did give us our appetizer as a compliment, but we really wanted to have our salad. She seemed nice but she was confused and the bar wasn't completely full, so I would hate to see how customers are treated when it is full! So next time we'll wait for a table, service seems better in the dining area. Bella
New review since first visit . It's a good thing when you come back twice and it gets better and better. I had to increase my rating.
Recently had the Lobster Roll, and Fish Tacos and they were awesome. I now must try the entire menu.
Food is very good, not great. You could easily enjoy a nice dinner in the $40 - $50 range but a few items on the menu will put you closer to the $75 - $100 range. The Maine Chips are great, a very unique app. The crabcake sandwich was very good. My biggest issue is the price of fried food....fried food should not cost $15-$20 per entree. Seriously overpriced in that department.
Stopped in for lunch yesterday (after the rush) and the service was excellent. Really appreciated the choice of meals available and I probably could have eaten every one of the desserts listed (can't say that about almost any other place I have been). The muffins and molasses butter was a nice start. Had the Maine chips and Lobster Roll which were very tasty. Although I agree the pricing may shock you at first, the meals were substantial enough and of sufficient quality that spending $40-50 for two isn't that bad. Ready to go back again and try the salmon and some more dessert!
My husband and I were out running errands and decided to try Ford's for dinner on the way home. I am not one for most seafood...developed an aversion to most of it during pregnancy and it kinda stuck with me. However, I gave the spinach and clam dip a try. The hubs and I agree that it was pretty good. And the chips that were served with it were "addicting." Very tasty. I had the fish and chips (one of the few types of seafood I actually like is a good fish and chips meal) and it was delicious. It was not super oily, the fries were not overcooked and it was quite filling as well. Hubby had the crab cakes and was impressed with the amount of fillers NOT used in them...that they were mostly crab. And that the accompanying sauce was served on the side, not poured over the crab cakes. We shared a red velvet whoopie pie for dessert. The cream cheese filling got a little sweet after a couple bites but the cake itself was very tasty. Moist, not dry. The chocolate ganache to pour over it....ooh, I could have put a straw in it and drank that itself, it was so good (then again I LOVE chocolate so I could be a little biased there!). And the shot of milk is a nice touch too. We decided we will definitely go back again in the future.
Ate here Friday with the family - we really liked it. Service was very good, food was good. Prices may have been a bit high but the quality and price of the salmon I had was equivalent to Sweetwater. Will definitely go back.
My wife and I went to Ford's this evening for dinner. I had the fish and chips and she had the shrimp roll. My wife thought her shrimp roll was okay but I absolutely loved the fish from the fish and chips. Having had my fair share of bad fish I had low expectations. This was absolutely delicious. Very light yet flavorful. I agree with someone earlier who said it would be nice to have a slice of lemon. Maybe it's not typical for it to be served this way in New England, but I like it. The atmosphere was great and they had a half way decent beer selection (Two Hearted Ale was on tap). It may seem pricey, but I'd rather pay the $15 for the Cod than $10 for Tilapia or some other fish that wouldn't taste nearly as good. I thought the shoestring fries were fine but I'm not big on fries anyway. I could see how someone might say the portions are slim. I usually always have leftovers when I eat out but I cleaned my basket tonight. It was just enough for me though. My wife also substituted broccolini for the fries and it was a $1 charge (waitress didn't tell us but I imagine it says somewhere on the menu). The grilled corn had a seasoning flavor that neither my wife or I enjoyed. The corn muffins with the maple butter were excellent. My daughter had popcorn shrimp and apple sauce. The shrimp were actually pretty tastey. We'll definetly go back for the fish and chips and I'm interested in trying the Lobster Roll and Crab Cakes as well.
I've eaten at Fords 4 times now and really like it. something a little different, with good service . One nice thing is that it is run by grown ups instead of kids with attitude; refreshing. They could lighten up on the fried food. Husband and son liked it too. Give these non-chain restaurants some business so the spot doesn't turn over again!
Not so great. Very hard chairs. The pricing is outrageous given the ambiance. Service was fine. Think Red Lobster quality but at north of Passionfish pricing, wouldn't go back.
I attended a business lunch at Ford's Fish Shack and I was impressed. The menu was varied and all of the dishes sounded good. Everyone around the table was happy with their selections. The only negative comment I have is that the rockfish filet that I had was from the less expensive part of the fish, not the nice thick fluffy filet I was expecting. However, the sauce was nice and the entire dish worked.
We had dinner at Fords on their second day in business. The place was organized, clean and the staff was well trained and Nice! We found the menu to be large enough to keep the kids happy, and the adults both had more than one option to try. The food was prompt, well cooked and presented. The staff seem to work as a team because there was never an empty glass or unneeded items on the table.
The Food tasted great, the kids completely cleaned their plates, a very good sign. The only negative for us was they are a bit stingy with the Ketchup. :)
Overall a very nice start and we will go again.

Great food, friendly staff, clean and local...what more can you ask for! If they could only expand to minimize the wait times.
