Plus, we tell you where NOT to find your next lawnmower.
Editor's Note: Patch has 31 sites in Virginia and D.C., and not a day goes by that something weird isn't happening somewhere in the area. Here's a look back at some weird goings on over the past week. Cicadas Everywhere (Or Not): A line has been drawn, and it isn't residents rejecting the D.C. metro label — it's cicadas that have decided they'd rather avoid the congestion inside the Beltway. We've been anxiously anticipating a crazy spring of buzzing cicadas crawling everywhere. Now, some of us are finding the big bugs crawling out of holes and up trees in Fredericksburg, Woodbridge and lower Fairfax County, but others haven't seen any of this year's brood. Enjoying the Breeze: Manassas City Police have a description of a suspect in …

'Hiring big names was not in the best interest of the film.'
To be fair, director Chris Wedge (of Ice Age and Rio) has created a nature-based fantasy engaging enough that it will find an audience, but when one changes the name of a movie from Leaf Men to Epic, one better come with one's A+ game, no? Epic qualifies for a solid C, which is still a passing grade, but if you brought that home to mom, she would be displeased. This over-plotted muddle with under-drawn characters is saved by a handful of characters' well-defined personalities and the beautifully rendered environments in which they interact. Click here for showtimes at the Alamo Drafthouse or Regal Fox. It doesn't help that director Wedge was comparing his newest with the grandiosity of Star Wars and Avatar. While both those incredibly …

I liked it. It was sweet and I enjoyed all of the forest creatures and how they were represented. It wasn't overpowered by voices I knew so I was able to give my attention to the characters and not imagine the actors behind the voices.   more ›

Nationwide, gas prices were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the last three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said. "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011. In past years, prices have declined heading into early summer as oil refineries produced more gasoline to meet expected summer driving demand. This year, though, Midwest refineries haven't …

I'm guessing this is a trick headline. Anyone who lives in Ashburn knows there is no cheap gas anywhere in Ashburn. It's kind of odd that there can be such large price differences for gas in stations located the same county.   more ›

Where and when to see the latest installment.
After five installments of what amounts to one long-running car chase, you'd think Fast & Furious would run out of gas by leg No 6. But the critics seems to like Fast & Furious 6 for what it is: something more than a fast-moving clunker. The most recent rendition has been doing gangbusters in the UK, and it opens in local theaters Thursday. Fast & Furious 6 Trailer Fast & Furious 6 showtimes and theaters in and around Ashburn Rotten Tomatoes says: It's no more sophisticated than previous entries, but thanks to a higher-octane sense of humor and some typically terrific set pieces, Fast & Furious 6 offers another enjoyable ride for fans of the franchise. JoBlo.com says: At the risk of sounding too much like a blurb on a poster, this movie …
Stone Hill Middle student Akhil Rekulapelli came in fourth in the national geography contest.

The accident occurred as heavy rain fell at the end of rush hour Thursday night and sent two people to the hospital.
At least two men were transported to the Inova Fairfax Hospital following a multi-vehicle collision on the Dulles Greenway shortly before 7 p.m. Thursday, according to a report from the Virginia State Police. An eastbound BMW crossed the median into westbound traffic and struck a Dodge SUV, according to the report. The BMW continued moving and struck a Mercedes Benz head on. As a result, a Ford Explorer also struck the Mercedes. The accident was between the Loudoun County Parkway and Route 772 exits, and shut the Greenway down for about an hour. Many drivers exited their vehicles while they waited for authorities to clear the lanes. Eventually, drivers were permitted to pass the accident on the left. The BMW driver, who suffered life-…
