Falcons prove way too dominant for Heritage in blowout win en route to third consecutive championship.
The Briar Woods Falcons completely overwhelmed and outmatched Heritage-Lynchburg Saturday to claim a third consecutive AA Division 4 state title in a resounding 52-0 win at Liberty University in Lynchburg. The Falcon defense scored first with a safety credited to J.T. Logan in the first quarter. Next, quarterback Trace McSorley capped a nice drive with a 1-yard touchdown plunge to extend the Falcons’ lead to 9-0. The first quarter was the only one in which Briar Woods did not score in double figures. During the second, Tristan Miller returned a Heritage punt 62 yards for a score, followed by a Cory Colder two-point conversion. Then, McSorley connected with Cam Serigne for another touchdown, essentially putting the game out of reach at 24-0…

Briar Woods cruised past Courtland to earn a spot in the championship against Heritage-Lynchburg; win would make third in a row.
The Briar Woods Falcons racked up 339 yards on the ground and five rushing touchdowns to pull away from the Courtland Cougars 45-15 and advance to the team's third straight AA Division 4 state championship game. Led by running back Cory Colder's 182 rushing yards and four scores, the Falcons broke open what had been a close game until the third quarter with two big plays from quarterback Trace McSorley. As the Courtland defense focused on trying to stop Colder – who gained 120 of his yards on the ground in the first half – McSorley found a Cam Serigne wide open for a 43-yard touchdown pass, and later broke loose for an 80-yard scoring run of his own. With the exception of allowing a few long passing plays, the Briar Woods defense stood as …

Briar Woods welcomes Courtland at home, while Stone Bridge heads to Hanover; wins would send each team to championship.
Ashburn’s high school football fans are in for a treat Saturday, with Briar Woods facing a AA Division 4 state semifinal at home against Courtland High School, and Stone Bridge heading south to play Hanover High School in the AAA Division 5 semifinal. Wins would send the Bulldogs to the state championship for the fifth time in the eight years and the Falcons to a third straight championship in their respective divisions. The Briar Woods game kicks off in Brambleton at 1:30 p.m. The Falcons (13-0) enter the contest after thumping Loudoun County 31-0 to claim a third straight Region 2 championship. Courtland (9-4) comes to town after winning a tightly contested 18-15 Region 4 title game over Smithfield. The teams met in the state semifinals …

All-American Rolin's status uncertain as Briar Woods prepares to face Eagles.
There are football games when the stats and final score don't tell the full story of the struggle on the gridiron; and Briar Woods’ matchup against Powhatan High School Friday proved to be one of those. The Briar Woods Falcons overcame a sluggish start and physical play from visiting Powhatan to ultimately pull away with a 34-7 win. But that even the postseason win was bittersweet since it came with a cost: All-American linebacker Matt Rolin suffered a knee injury and could not return to the game. His status remains uncertain. The Falcons compiled a 10-0 regular season record and outscored the final three opponents in the regular season by a combined score of 144-0, but on Friday were knotted in a low-scoring defensive battle through the …

Broad Run wins season finale but falls short on pursuit of playoff spot.
The Briar Woods Falcons and Stone Bridge Bulldogs each wrapped up undefeated 10-0 regular seasons Friday night, and now the two juggernauts turn their attention to the playoffs. Broad Run, however, must begin to focus on next year; even with a win in the season finale the team did not earn a spot in the playoffs. Falcons Shut Raiders Out On paper Briar Woods had the toughest matchup on Friday, traveling to face an 8-1 Loudoun County High School team that was fresh off a 48-6 shellacking of Heritage. But the Falcons showed once again that they are simply a cut above their Dulles District foes — and maybe every Region 4 team in the state — as they raced to a 24-0 halftime lead and cruised to a dominating 45-0 win. A balanced offense and …

Briar Woods and Stone Bridge close in on unbeaten regular seasons Friday, while Broad Run seeks to extend its season.
Sad to say, but the end of the high school football regular season is upon us as Ashburn’s schools prepare for their final games this week. Luckily for local fans, the Briar Woods Falcons and the Stone Bridge Bulldogs will extend their seasons with guaranteed playoff spots, while the Broad Run Spartans needs a win and some help to see their season continue. Falcons Conquer Vikings Last week, Briar Woods (9-0, 7-0) put on perhaps its most dominating performance of the season in a 45-0 win over Loudoun Valley. The Falcon defense simply smothered the Vikings, holding them to negative ten net yards for the game. That's right, negative ten yards, total. The Vikings converted just one first down and completed just one pass as Falcon defenders …

Blowout district victories keep Bulldogs' and Falcons' perfect seasons intact.
While RGIII's unexpected visit to Broad Run's win over Patriot High School created a lot of Ashburn buzz Friday night, across town Stone Bridge and Briar Woods were buzz-sawing through district foes and shutting down two of the areas leading rushers to extend their unbeaten streaks this season. Stone Bridge (6-0) hosted the Langley Saxons (3-3) and lightning quick running back Philip Mun, who entered the game on the heels of a 224-yard rushing performance against Madison. The Bulldogs’ defensive game plan focused on shutting down Mun and the Saxons option attack by playing disciplined, assignment-based football to avoid getting juked by the misdirection offense. While stats don't always tell the full story of a game, in this case they do. …

Briar Woods, Broad Run and Stone Bridge each captured big wins Friday night.
Ashburn high school football fans enjoyed a great night across the board Friday, as all three of the community’s teams ran a way with convincing wins by a combined score of 114-20. The Briar Woods Falcons seemingly had the toughest test when they hit the road to play the previously unbeaten Tuscarora Huskies. But the result was something Falcons fans have become accustomed to during the past three years: a dominating defense and strong rushing attack spurred Briar Woods to the 35-6 victory and a 6-0 record. Cory Colder ran for 120 yards and three touchdowns, while Matt Rolin paced the defense with six tackles, and Trace McSorley and Darryll Gadsden each recorded an interception. The Falcons next host Woodgrove for homecoming this Friday …

Falcons too much for the Panthers as All-American linebacker returns from injury
The Briar Woods Falcons crushed the visiting Potomac Falls Panthers on Friday night, playing near perfect defense and rushing the ball at will on their way to a 49-3 district win. With highlights aplenty, the biggest story for the Falcons was the return of All-American linebacker Matt Rolin to the line up after missing several games to an ankle injury. Briar Woods (5-0, 3-0 in the district) scored early and often to race out to a 35-0 halftime lead. The Falcon offensive line paved the way for the staggering 15 players that combined to rush for 262 yards for Briar Woods on the night. Quarterback Trace McSorley actually led the backfield by super-committee attack, as he racked up 59-yards on the ground. McSorley also threw for 130 yards and …
