Falcons, Bulldogs Complete Undefeated Regular Seasons

Broad Run wins season finale but falls short on pursuit of playoff spot.

The Briar Woods Falcons and Stone Bridge Bulldogs each wrapped up undefeated 10-0 regular seasons Friday night, and now the two juggernauts turn their attention to the playoffs. Broad Run, however, must begin to focus on next year; even with a win in the season finale the team did not earn a spot in the playoffs. Falcons Shut Raiders Out On paper Briar Woods had the toughest matchup on Friday, traveling to face an 8-1 Loudoun County High School team that was fresh off a 48-6 shellacking of Heritage. But the Falcons showed once again that they are simply a cut above their Dulles District foes — and maybe every Region 4 team in the state — as they raced to a 24-0 halftime lead and cruised to a dominating 45-0 win. A balanced offense and …

Playoffs: Falcons, Bulldogs In, Spartans Need Win

Briar Woods and Stone Bridge close in on unbeaten regular seasons Friday, while Broad Run seeks to extend its season.

Sad to say, but the end of the high school football regular season is upon us as Ashburn’s schools prepare for their final games this week. Luckily for local fans, the Briar Woods Falcons and the Stone Bridge Bulldogs will extend their seasons with guaranteed playoff spots, while the Broad Run Spartans needs a win and some help to see their season continue. Falcons Conquer Vikings Last week, Briar Woods (9-0, 7-0) put on perhaps its most dominating performance of the season in a 45-0 win over Loudoun Valley. The Falcon defense simply smothered the Vikings, holding them to negative ten net yards for the game. That's right, negative ten yards, total. The Vikings converted just one first down and completed just one pass as Falcon defenders …

Broad Run Stumbles; Stone Bridge Rolls

The Spartans lose district game on the road and the Bulldogs dominate McLean, while the Falcons take a bye.

As October eases closer to an end, high school football games take on added importance as district races heat up and the playoffs edge ever closer. Friday night, two Ashburn teams moved in opposite directions, with Broad Run losing a pivotal district matchup on the road, while Stone Bridge again exerted its dominance in the Liberty District during homecoming weekend. Coming off three straight wins, including last week's impressive 28-7 victory over Osbourn, Broad Run (4-4, 1-1 in district) had a chance to claim a share of the Cedar Run District lead with a win at Battlefield. Despite staying close through the first half, the Spartans could not keep pace with a bruising and balanced Battlefield attack. Austin Thibodeaux, Joe Walker and Ryan…

Pink'd RGIII Drives Broad Run to Victory

Star rookie NFL quarterback shows up at Broad Run football game to support breast cancer awareness event.

Joyful pandemonium reigned supreme at Broad Run High School Friday night, when Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III made an unannounced visit to support the school's "Pink'd" breast cancer awareness campaign, and seemingly spurred the Spartans to fourteen unanswered third quarter points and an important 34-20 win over Patriot. Griffin coyly tweeted his possible plans to crash the Broad Run event earlier in the evening with the innocuous-sounding question "What quarter is the Pink'd game at broad run high school in?" For those in the twitosphere and beyond, the question may have seemed a bit random for a superstar rookie quarterback. But behind the scenes, a spirited social media campaign by Broad Run students to invite RGIII to their "…

Clean Sweep for Ashburn Football Teams

Briar Woods, Broad Run and Stone Bridge each captured big wins Friday night.

Ashburn high school football fans enjoyed a great night across the board Friday, as all three of the community’s teams ran a way with convincing wins by a combined score of 114-20. The Briar Woods Falcons seemingly had the toughest test when they hit the road to play the previously unbeaten Tuscarora Huskies. But the result was something Falcons fans have become accustomed to during the past three years: a dominating defense and strong rushing attack spurred Briar Woods to the 35-6 victory and a 6-0 record. Cory Colder ran for 120 yards and three touchdowns, while Matt Rolin paced the defense with six tackles, and Trace McSorley and Darryll Gadsden each recorded an interception. The Falcons next host Woodgrove for homecoming this Friday …

Burns Ignites Stone Bridge Offense Past Broad Run

Battle of the 'Burn turns into blowout with Bulldog big plays, stifling defense

In front of a packed house of maroon and gold faithful, Broad Run started Friday night's highly anticipated Battle of the 'Burn in near perfect fashion. Led by the gritty running of quarterback Brady Reitzel and tailback Da'Qwan Earl, the Spartans executed a methodical fifteen play, 75-yard drive that ate up nearly seven minutes of the first quarter, keeping the high-powered Stone Bridge offense off the field. The home crowd was raucous, and the Spartans appeared destined to capture an early lead and momentum in this clash of Ashburn football titans. But in less than a minute, all of that changed. The Spartans missed a short field goal as the drive stalled, and the Bulldogs needed just three plays to claim an early lead they would never …

Battle of the 'Burn at Broad Run Friday Night

Ashburn football rivals Broad Run and Stone Bridge look to equal last year's thrilling game

Local high school football fans are in for a treat Friday night when the Broad Run Spartans host the Stone Bridge Bulldogs in what has been dubbed "The Battle of the Burn." Both schools are steeped in strong football tradition, with the Spartans capturing back-to-back AA state titles in 2008 and 2009, and the Bulldogs claiming a AAA state crown in 2007, among several other state playoff appearances.  Last year the two squared off in an epic game that saw Stone Bridge overcome a 24-0 lead en route to a remarkable 31-30 overtime win in front of a packed home crowd. This year the Spartans will host this must-see event for local high school football fans. The game has captured regional and even national attention, as the rivalry is explored in…

Falcons, Bulldogs Win Again; Spartans Suffer Tough Road Loss

Briar Woods and Stone Bridge start the season undefeated while Broad Run looks to rebound from two straight losses.

It was another action packed Friday night for Ashburn high school football teams, as Stone Bridge hosted its second straight game against a traditional Virginia football power, while Briar Woods and Broad Run each hit the road for key early season matchups. Stone Bridge 24 Chantilly 8 Stone Bridge hosted the Chantilly Chargers in a game pitting two of the Washington Post's top-ranked teams. The third-ranked Bulldogs raced out to an early lead on the shoulders of a stout defense and banner rushing performance by Rassaun Goldring, resulting in a 24-8 win. Forced into action at running back because of teammates’ injuries, the fleet-footed Goldring raced for 147 yards and two touchdowns on just 10 carries. Alabama-bound All-American candidate …

What Offseason? Pt. 3: Broad Run Football

The Spartans' offseason focused on developing leaders and community service to bring the team together.

The Broad Run Spartans football team relied on a senior-laden roster last season to make a successful jump from AA to AAA competition. Led by district Players of the Year Connor Jessop at quarterback and linebacker Caleb Lindsay, the Spartans captured a share of their first ever Cedar Run district championship and a trip to the AAA playoffs. But the realities of high school football hit the Spartans hard last spring when Jessop, Lindsay and a host of other talented seniors graduated. Gone are the likes of all-district workhorse running back Derril Thomas, behemoth offensive linemen Jackson Matteo and Brenden Vechery, and versatile players such as Michael Stratton, Avery Campbell and Danny Gallagher. The loss of so many seniors left the …

Ashburn Football: What Offseason?

Training is a year-round affair for Ashburn high school football teams, and is a key reason for their continued success.

Summer vacation for high school students is supposed to be about rest, relaxation and fun in the sun. But for football players at the highly successful and competitive programs run by Briar Woods, Stone Bridge and Broad Run high schools, summertime means work.  Grueling weight-lifting sessions, conditioning drills and regular practices help prepare the players for the rigors of the upcoming season. While all the extra work means less time for the beach, players and coaches alike agree the sacrifices are worth it; such drive is the likely why the Ashburn area has emerged as a hot bed of talent and success. Over the next two weeks, Ashburn Patch will provide an insiders view of all three school's offseason programs, beginning with today's …
