Falcons Down Blue Demons for State Title

For second year in a row, the Briar Woods pushes through in the Virginia's Division 4 football championship.

The Briar Woods Falcons Varsity Football team returned home from the AA Division 4 Virginia championship trophy – the teams second state title in two years, marking the beginning of Ashburn's newest football dynasty. The Falcons knocked of the Christiansburg Blue Demons 28-26 with the defense stopping a two-point conversion late in the game that would tied it up. Viva Loudoun's Dan Sousa reported on the game from Lynchburg and provides full coverage here. In years past, Stone Bridge and Broad Run have grabbed all the glory with repeat trips to the state final, but the Bulldogs were in a rebuilding phase this year – and still performed very well – while the Spartans fell short in their first, and very competent, season of AAA football. …

Ashburn's Young Women Athletes Win State Titles

The Broad Run girls soccer team wins its fourth consecutive championship, while Briar Woods softball wins its first.

The Broad Run girls soccer and the Briar Woods softball teams each claimed state championship victories June 11 at Radford University. The Lady Spartans won a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Blacksburg to win their fourth straight state title. Cassie Smith connected with Erin Brady for the game's only goal in the first half. From there, disciplined defense took over. The Spartans registered their second straight shutout in the state playoffs after allowing one goal in the quarterfinal game against Jamestown. The state softball final was not nearly as close for the Falcons; the team registered a 9-1 blowout win over Loudoun rival Woodgrove to claim its first ever softball state championship. Bulldogs Blowout Highlanders in Hockey Final

Stone Bridge takes the NVSHL championship trophy with a 7-2 win over McLean.

The Stone Bridge Bulldogs became the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League Championships Friday night with a 7-2 victory over the McLean Highlanders at the Kettler Iceplex in Arlington. Stone Bridge led 3-0 at the end of the first period with goals by Trevor Mack, Anthony Moffa and Chris Berry, and McLean never came within striking distance. The Highlanders killed a potential shutout when Julian Kell put one past Tanner Jones in the second period, but that goal and a second by Kell in the final period were the only scores for McLean. Bulldogs Andrew Baron and Max Florence each found the back of the net before the end of the second. Moffa slipped his second goal of the evening by the Highlanders keeper early in the third period and …

Maged Leads Bulldog Wrestlers at District Finals

Stone Bridge places second at meet and eight qualify for the regionals.

Several Stone Bridge wrestlers performed well enough this weekend to move on to the regional competition after the Bulldogs scored second place behind Langley at Saturday’s Liberty District championship meet in McLean. Langley’s impressive roster of finalists put the overall title out of reach, but the remaining teams fought for second place. Freshman Garrett Maged’s win at 112 pounds clinched that spot for Stone Bridge, despite of the fact that he was the only one of four Bulldog finalists to win his weight class. His dramatic 8-6 overtime win over Marshall’s James Cusack gave Stone Bridge 118.5 points, putting the team ahead of Marshall, which finished third at 114.5. The Warhawks took third even though they earned just three individual …

The Bulldogs finished 4-0 with the following scores: 48-21 over Edison; 50-9 over Briar Woods; 51-26 over McLean; 39-24 over Stonewall Jackson. Thanks to Jeff Taylor for sending  these photos, which were taken by Karen Faul, head coach Michael Faul's wife. Local wrestling fans can catch the Liberty District meet this weekend, Feb. 4-5, at McLean High School, …

Briar Woods Wins State Championship

The Falcons overcome early deficit and smother the Blue Streaks in 41-21 Division 4 final

The Briar Woods Falcons were in unfamiliar territory trailing the undefeated Harrisonburg 14-0 early in the first quarter during Saturday's Division 4 state championship. The team was off to a slow start on offense and its typically reliable defense could not stop Harrisonburg's rushing attack. The early deficit could have been disastrous for the young football program, but instead of conceding defeat, Coach Charlie Pierce and his Falcons team remained poised en route to the schools first state title.  Harrisonburg (13-1) scored early thanks to its talented running back Michael Holmes and an early interception. Falcon Quarterback Trace McSorley threw the interception to Blue Streaks linebacker Ryan Fletcher, setting up a Holmes touchdown …
