Money raised by the Masquerade Ball and Silent Auction goes back to the community, helping local people in need build a home of their own.

For the second year, Loudoun Habitat for Humanity has planned a Masquerade Ball and Silent Auction. The cocktail hour starts at 6 p.m., providing guests with an opportunity to mingle and bid on the long list of silent auction items. The cocktail hour will be followed by a seated dinner and dancing to the music of Pebble to Pearl, a local group that was well-received at last year’s event.  Established in 1993, Loudoun Habitat has built or rehabilitated 21 houses in Loudoun County, serving about 80 people. During the past two to three years, Habitat has built three new homes in western Loudoun in the Village of St. Louis, just north of Middleburg, and purchased, rehabbed and resold six foreclosed properties in the eastern part of the county…

Help Mali Thai Help Ryan Diviney

Local business plans yearlong fundraiser for Ashburn family.

Mali Thai Cuisine, in the Broadlands shopping center, will kick off a fundraiser for Ryan Diviney Sunday that will help the young Ashburn man’s family continue his medical care. Diviney was left in a coma-like state after a group of young men attacked Ryan and his friends while he was attending West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV.  He requires constant care from his family and the Ashburn community has tried to find ways to help. Besides the Mali Thai fundraiser, the recent Declutter for the Divineys event in Belmont Greene also helped the family. On the 21st of each month for the next year, starting Oct. 21, Mali Thai will contribute 15 percent of its profits to the Diviney family. The fundraiser ends Sept. 21, 2013, Ryan’s …

Romney to Campaign in Sterling Wednesday

McDonnell raises money for Ramadan a private party in Ashburn.

Loudoun County could become critical ground for political parties this year as Mitt Romney attempts to unseat President Barack Obama and former governor George Allen faces former governor Tim Kaine in the race for U.S. Senate. Romney is expected at EIT LLC in Sterling at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday to personally present a new truck to 70-year-old Virginia “superfan” named Jim Wilson, who lost the truck he had been using to campaign for Romney in a fire, according to a New York Times blog. Gov. Bob McDonnell, who has been mentioned as a potential running mate for Romney, made a stop in Ashburn Tuesday night to attend a private fundraiser in honor of Del. David Ramadan (R-87th). Tickets for that event were $500 to $5,000 each. McDonnell attended a …

Romney = Obama. I see no difference in the two. Both will lead this country into socialism and decline, the only difference is the speed at which we proceed.   more ›

Bake Sale at Ashburn Lacrosse Game to Benefit Ryan Diviney

If you haven't made plans tonight, head out to see the Broad Run and Briar Woods varsity or junior varsity lacrosse games and help a member of our community.

The Broad Run and Briar Woods lacrosse organizations have planned a BAKE SALE FUNDRAISER for Round 2 of the Battle of Ashburn LAX game tonight to benefit Ryan Diviney. The JV teams will face off at Broad Run while the varsity teams play at Briar Woods. Both games start at 7:30 p.m. It promises to be a night full of great lacrosse, with many Ashburn LAX Alums on the field, as well as good things to eat for a special cause. The fundraiser’s honoree, Ashburn resident Ryan Diviney, was brutally beaten in 2009 while attending college in West Virginia and has been in a coma-like state since. Ryan now requires constant care from his family, which they provide with love, but which also has created a significant ongoing financial burden. The …

Pink Martinis and Bikinis May Save a Life!

A March 3 Ashburn Pub fundraiser aims to aims to help an Ashburn mom battle cancer.

Drink a beer or a pink martini, listen to some great music and save a life! You can do all three of these March 3, at Ashburn Pub’s annual Beach Party, where a portion of the proceeds will help fund cancer treatments for a 37-year-old, Ashburn mother of four. Malea Kanoho has stage IV metastatic breast cancer. Her treatments cost between $1,800 and $2,700 a week, and her health insurance does not cover the cost. Kanoho was first diagnosed with breast cancer in April of 2009 and was declared to be in remission in November 2009. Unfortunately, the cancer came back and spread to her lungs. On New Year’s Eve 2011, Kanoho was told that there was nothing more the doctors could do to help her. But, Malea and her husband, Jason Kanoho, decided …

That’s because the YMCA of Loudoun County has been busy preparing for the 25th Annual Chocolates Galore & More! event, scheduled to take place this Friday.   Administrative Assistant Sarah Miley said the event is more like a competition. There will be 22 presenters that will represent some of the finest restaurants and bakeries from around the area. They will compete in sweet and savory categories, Miley said, before being judged by not only a professional but everyone who attends. “We are projecting about 800 attendees this year,” Miley said, adding that the event has grown every year. What an interesting way to honor a man. This might be the first time I have seen a family remembering the death of a loved one by having a casino night, complete with poker and even slots. The man must have been a big fan of poker to have them organize it this way. Brandon - http://www.doubledowncasino.com   more ›

Lara’s League Hosts 'Big Pink' Yard Sale, Flea Market

Residents are invited to an event intended to raise awareness about and money to fight breast cancer.

UPDATE: This event has been cancelled because of weather. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and as the month enters its final week, there is still at least one way to support the fight against the disease. Anyone looking for a bargain or hoping to eliminate clutter, should plan to attend “The Big Pink Flea Community Yard Sale and Market” from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 29. Lara’s League organized the event, which takes place at Belmont Country Club in the Manor House parking lot. Lara’s League was created in 2009 after Ashburn resident Lara Hopewell was diagnosed with breast cancer – after the diagnosis, her husband, Rob, created a Facebook page and called it Lara’s League. Then, a group of friends who had previously planned to …
