The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office is investigating two separate cases in which a suspicious person has approached a child and offered them a ride in their vehicle. LCSO says the cases are not believed to be related, but they are both being investigated as suspicious. The first case was reported Friday by a 12-year-old girl in Ashburn, who was walking around 2:30 p.m. in the area of Bruceton Mills Circle and Lemon Tree Place when she said a small, tan four-door passenger car pulled up alongside her. The driver, a middle-aged woman with blonde hair, began talking to the girl and then asked her if she wanted to get into the vehicle. The girl declined and went home. The second case was reported around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, when a child walking …

Kids do need to be careful, and it's great that neither one of them accepted the ride. I happen to know the story behind the first incident, and it was just a mom, who had a car full of kids she was picking up from the bus stop, offering another child a ride home because it was freezing cold out. Hopefully, the second incident was someone else with similar good intentions. It's sad that kids and …   more ›

The suspect was driving his personal vehicle, not a county-issued vehicle. The name of the officer was not released. An LCSO press release stated that the reason for not reporting the name is because “this is both a criminal and personnel matter, and because of safety …

LCSO Responds to Story about El-Atari Release

Spokesman defends jail workers, explains calculation of time served.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement today, Aug. 3, in response to a Washington Post story regarding the release of Osama M. El-Atari from the Loudoun Adult Detention Center in March 9, 2007. The story juxtaposed the timing of campaign contributions from El-Atari to Loudoun County Sheriff Stephen O. Simpson with El-Atari's release date. While the LCSO cannot respond regarding the sheriff's campaign or contributions to it, LCSO spokesman Kraig Troxell said he believed the Post story did not fairly explain how time served is calculated. Troxell said he believes El-Atari served his two days in jail as it is calculated by the Loudoun jail and peer law enforcement jurisdictions. “We had tried to explain this to the Washington …
