Top news of the week from our Patches around Virginia and DC.
Patch has 31 community sites in Virginia and D.C. Here are some of the top stories from around the region over the past week. 20. Affordable housing continues to be a major topic of discussion in Alexandria. The Virginia Department of Transportation sold Hunting Point, two eight-story apartment buildings, to a realty firm. Alexandria's City Council had asked that any purchaser not turn the buildings into luxury apartments that could displace its current tenants who require more affordable housing. That message was passed on to the new buyers, according to VDOT, but was not a condition of the sale. 19. On the west side of Alexandria, the City Planning Commission gave the go-ahead to major rezoning in the Beauregard area that will tear down …

Meet Leo, a handsome St. Bernard-mix with a sweet, gentle spirit and accepting nature.
Hey there, Patch readers. My name is Leo and I’m a soft, fluffy ball of sweetness with a very laid-back attitude. Mutts Matter thinks I’m a St. Bernard-mix, which makes sense given how tall and handsome I am. I have a soft and flowing creamy-white coat, and big, soulful brown eyes. I’m about four or five years old and weigh 85 pounds, but I could stand to put on some more weight due to the lack of care I received in my last home. Just because my last owner wasn’t good to me is no reason for me to hold a grudge against the rest of the world, so I stay positive and friendly with everyone I meet, no matter who they are. I was rescued out of a shelter in rural South Carolina, after being saved from my home by Animal Control. I was underweight …

Sweet Monty was saved by a local teen from life on the streets and is looking for his new family
Monty is the true definition of a love bug. He’s a sweet, affectionate and playful pit-mix who just wants to be loved and be part of a family. He’s a handsome boy who’s only a year old and weighs in at about 60 pounds. His body is still playing catch-up with his big, blocky head, and he has a big, warm bully smile that lights up when he sees you. Monty’s story is one that demonstrates the best and worst in people. He was found running free in an abandoned parking lot near a major highway by Lauren Bradford, a Good Samaritan and local senior at Fairfax High School. Lauren’s parents were away for the weekend, and she took it upon herself to take this sweet pup in, canvass the local neighborhoods and post flyers and ads on Craigslist in …

The event includes the raffle of a $1,250 diamond necklace, with all proceeds going to Mutts Matter.
Businesses of all shapes and sizes donate to charity, and they often give to the large, name brand organizations with big marketing budgets. Everyone can rally around the fight to cure cancer, help kids in need or support victims of natural disasters, and all of these things are very worthy and important causes. What’s not as common, however, is to see prominent businesses get behind local dog rescue. Rescue groups like Mutts Matter get most of their corporate sponsorships from companies in the pet industry that understand the importance of rescue and know the hard, sad facts – that five to seven million animals enter the shelter system each year, and over four million don’t make it out. As an all-volunteer, nonprofit rescue, Mutts …

Meet Zen, a gentle, sweet Shar-Pei looking for his forever home.
Need a little calm canine energy in your life? Meet Zen, a laid-back and super-sweet Chinese Shar-Pei who’s about five years old and weighs in at 50 pounds. Zen is a unique and striking dog who has a very gentle way about him, and just wants to be loved and to find his new place in the world. After being purchased from an Arizona breeder, Zen was surrendered by his owner, who claimed he was working longer hours and wasn’t able to care for him. Poor Zen lived in a home with his family for over four years and then suddenly found himself abandoned in a shelter for six long months. This is, unfortunately, a story that happens to good dogs every day. Because of his sweet, calm demeanor, Zen quickly became a staff favorite at the shelter, and …

Fonzie is a fun, lovable and goofy Bulldog who will make a great addition to any family.
I had the pleasure of hanging out with Fonzie last week. He greeted me at the door with a huge bully smile and happy tail wag, then escorted me to his couch where he sat down and shared some love in exchange for a rub. Fonzie is a very friendly, social dog who warms up quickly to new people and rolls with the punches. He’s amusing just to watch, and reminds you of a football team’s mascot or a dog who’d be in commercials. He is full of personality and definitely star material. Fonzie is a handsome English Bulldog who is about five years old and weighs 70 pounds. He has unique coloring with striking brindle patches on his coat, and a smile that lights up and opens as wide as his head when he sees you. He was more energetic and playful …

Sweet Carolina is an affectionate, playful and good-natured Bassett Hound mix in search of a loving home.
Meet sweet Carolina, an adorable Bassett Hound/Border Collie mix with a friendly disposition and an engaging spirit. Carolina is not your typical laid-back Bassett Hound; she still has a nice mix of youthful energy and playfulness to share with her new family. She’s only about a year-and-a-half old and weighs 28 pounds, has a sweet smile, big brown eyes, cute floppy ears and a gorgeous, shiny black-and-white coat. She is a friendly, affectionate pup who would be great with kids and other dogs, and is always up for a new adventure. Carolina was rescued out of a shelter in rural South Carolina after being seized by Animal Control and removed from her home. She was diagnosed and treated for heartworm, which is transmitted by mosquitos and …

Mutts Matter hopes to find a home soon for this pug mix.
Sunday, August 21, 2011
Hello. My name is Jacob, but everyone calls me Jake. I'm a very sweet, 2-year-old pug mix, and I weigh about 20 pounds. Mutts Matter thinks I may be mixed with a Boston Terrier, so I'm larger than your average Pug. It's hard to tell from my photos, but my snout is not as compressed as a purebred Pug, and I have longer legs too. I'm the complete package pup ... I'm potty-trained, walk well on a leash, and I stay home during the day when my foster mom goes to work and do a great job on my own. I love to go on car rides, play with my toys, or snuggle up next to you on the couch. I'm very smart, too, and already know how to sit, stay and I will come when you call me. My foster mom calls me Mr. Social because I love everyone I meet, and when I …

The Pekingese is among many dogs at Mutts Matter need of new homes.
Thursday, August 11, 2011
Calm and cool … that’s Mo Mo. Hello! My name is Mo Mo. I'm a laid-back Pekingese who is looking for a loving family to share my life with. I'm about 7 years old and weigh 15 pounds. I'm potty-trained, love to go on car rides, and walk great on a leash. I'm always up for a game of tug-of-war or strolling outside if it’s not too hot, but most often you'll find me relaxing, napping or cuddling next to your feet. I'm great with other dogs and quite social, but I'm best at being your personal companion. I'd be a great fit for an individual who is looking for a buddy, or a family with another dog. I love attention, but when it comes to being picked up, I prefer to initiate the action rather than have someone grab me. For that reason, I'm …

Mutts Matter hopes to find a families to adopt Elmer and Teddy.

Elmer, hound/Rhodesian Ridgeback mix Hello! My name is Elmer. I'm a hound mix, and Mutts Matter thinks I might have some Rhodesian Ridgeback in me too. I'm about one year old, 40 lbs., and am a very sweet boy who still has some puppy energy in me. I love to run and play fetch, and when I run and chase the ball, I spring in the air like a deer. I'm good with other dogs and would love to find a home with a pup brother or sister. I'm potty-trained, crate-trained, and already know the sit command. I was rescued because I was a victim of the Alabama tornado. I lost my home and my family. Thankfully, Mutts Matter took me in and I have a second chance at a great life. I need a family who will make me feel secure and can show me some leadership …
