The doctor answers questions that often come up at the holidays.
Debating the Santa ‘Lie’ Dr. Mike, My husband feels that we should not lie to our 3-year-old child about Santa Claus. He is concerned that our child will resent us for it later and that it will compromise her trust in us as parents. He says he “wants to prepare her for life” as soon as possible. I, however, can’t stand the idea of raising our child in a Santa free environment. He and I grew up with childhoods that included Santa at Christmas, so his over the top pragmatism just doesn’t make any sense to me. I also have such fond memories of Christmas and want the same for our children. Thoughts? S in Loudoun County S, I do not think your husband is seeing the forest for the trees, as the old saying goes. I suppose Santa is “a lie,” and for…

Every year, millions of children sit down to make a wish list for Santa, hoping he will make all of their Christmas dreams come true. But what if Santa actually wrote back? The United States Postal Service is now accepting "Letters From Santa," a program that allows any person to play Santa by sending a letter signed by Saint Nick to any child. According to a postal service news release, "The 'Letters From Santa' program helps parents fulfill the dreams of their own children." Instructions to send a letter from Santa: In Ashburn, letters to Santa can be dropped off at any USPS service center, including at Global Food and in the Broadlands shopping center, as well as the nearest post office, 44715 Prentice Drive, in Dulles. TELL US: Do your…

Why I wouldn't suggest this show to anyone.
Have you ever wanted to attend an event or buy something for a long time and then, once you did you realized it wasn’t worth the money you spent? Well, that’s exactly what happened to me. For years I’ve been interested in taking my children to the National Harbor to see ICE!™. ICE!™ is a holiday attraction located across the street from the Gaylord National hotel in Oxon Hill, MD (now known as “National Harbor, MD”). I've heard people rave about this event but the frugal mom in me wasn’t too thrilled about spending $35 per person for two adult tickets and $30 per person for two children’s tickets* to drive all the way to Maryland to see it. Enter Living Social. I noticed a deal one day on Living Social that I could purchase an adult ticket…

The Ashburn Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department led the holiday symbols on a tour of the community.
Look kids! It's Santa on his sleigh with his reindeer leading the way! No, wait ... that's the Ashburn Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department (AVFRD) giving the reindeer a break and letting Santa spread holiday cheer throughout Ashburn by riding on the back of the big yellow fire truck with Frosty! For the second year, the Ashburn Village Sports Pavilion hosted the Santa Procession. Fire trucks, ambulances and other rescue vehicles from the AVFRD led the way as Santa rode through the streets of Ashburn and arrived at the Sports Pavilion to greet excited children. While waiting for Santa's arrival, residents enjoyed Christmas caroling, free hot chocolate and donuts, and the winter wonderland decorations on the Pavilion lawn. Residents can help …

Why does society condone lying to the kids?
My son turns 3 years old this year. He now fully understands everything we say. When strangers ask him if he'll be a good boy for Santa, he remembers. He's got to be wondering who this Santa person is. And I don't want to lie to him. What to do? I can't tell him Santa doesn't exist. I'll get notes from school that my little boy trampled other kids' fantasies and other parents will come beat me. I can't simply leave out gifts from Santa. My son will wonder why Santa hates him and will think he's a bad boy. He'll spend years in therapy overcoming his plummeted self-esteem. I can't join the Santa hype. When he finds out the truth, he'll question everything we've ever told him. Right will become wrong; up will become down; and my son will …

A holiday tradition continues at NORAD, the joint Canadian and American aerospace and maritime defense organization centered in Colorado–Santa Claus will be allowed to enter U.S. airspace on Christmas Eve; however, his movements will be tracked carefully and he will be monitored as he travels around the world. Using an ultra-sophisticated combination of radar, infrared technology and remote camera surveillance–along with some really cool airplanes–NORAD will continually follow his whereabouts and post updates on the Internet throughout Christmas Eve, all in the interest of national security. A countdown has been posted on the NORAD Web site, which provides videos, games and historical information about the popular holiday tradition. In …
