The Virginia State Police are on scene at several locations across Loudoun County, where flooding and overflowing creeks continue to close roads Tuesday. On Tuesday morning, the agency detailed its efforts throughout the storm in a post on its Facebook page. "Statewide between 12:01 a.m. Sunday (Oct. 28, 2012) and 10 a.m. Tuesday (Oct. 30, 2012), Virginia troopers responded to 583 traffic crashes and 690 disabled vehicles," the post read. In Division VII, which includes Loudoun, Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax and Prince William Counties, officers responded to 82 traffic crashes, 125 disabled vehicles and 1,0001 calls for service. Dominion Power restores power to more than 100,000 in 24 hours after strong storm hits Saturday.
Update Sunday 5:30 p.m.: Things are starting to get back to normal for those who lost power over the weekend, just in time for getting back to work and school on Monday. Dominion Power has restored power to more than 100,000 homes in 24 hours time in Northern Virginia. As of about 5:15 p.m. on Sunday, Dominion Power reported 2,114 still without power in Northern Virginia. Friday night’s storms caused major power outages and downed many trees across Loudoun County. As residents clean up the mess from the high winds and heavy downpours, the Loudoun County government reminded them to be wary power lines laying on the ground, which still may be live with electricity. In addition, resident are asked to use flashlights and battery-operated equipment rather than candles during the outage. High temperatures will continue Saturday, with a heat index of about 104 anticipated. Any impacts Hurricane Irene inflicts on Ashburn are expected to come later in the day Saturday or early Sunday, according to the latest projections from the National Weather Service. The most recent reports show the storm likely passing through the area early Sunday. While Ashburn is on the fringe of anticipated storm path scenarios, residents may want to prepare for the worst. The most recent forecasts show the storm shifting slightly west, closer to our area. Gov. A flash flood watch issued by the National Weather Service includes the Ashburn and surrounding area and prompted a warning from the sheriff's office to drive cautiously. A flash flood watch means that anticipated weather conditions could result in dangerous rapid flooding in certain areas. According to the weather service, remnants of storms in the South are moving northward. Light rain now hitting the area from the southeast will increase in intensity tonight as a low-pressure system tracks up the east coast, the NWS reported via its alert system.
