Boys and girls teams finish second in Dulles District Tournament.
The Briar Woods Girls Swim Team captured a 3rd Dulles District Regular Season title in 4 years, and both the boys and girls finished 2nd at the Dulles District Championships Monday for the second year running. During the regular, season the girls maintained a perfect record, going 11-0 and bringing their dual meet win streak to 36-0 dating back to the 2008-2009 season. The boys went 10-1 with their only loss coming to District Champion Potomac Falls. Both the boys and girls had some outstanding swims at the championship meet. Ashburn teams compete as Old Dominion Swimming League season draws to a close.
Even though summer is still in full swing, the area youth swimming season is quickly coming to an end. Over the next few weeks, Ashburn Patch will be featuring action from the end of season meets. This week, Patch is highlighting photos from the Courts & Ridges Lightning, a neighborhood swim team and member of the Old Dominion Swim League (ODSL). The Lightning team goals are to improve the team members’ swimming skills, provide every member the experience of participating in the swim meets, and to have fun! Loudoun's only triathlon specialty store opens in Leesburg.
About 100 yards from the Washington and Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail where an art studio used to be located sits a gold mine for local triathletes! Opening this week, Transition Triathlon will be the first triathlon store in Leesburg and the only triathlon store in Loudoun County! Husband and wife team Steve Makranczy and Alex Korab, Transition’s owners, are excited to be in the historic downtown area of Leesburg and even more excited to be close to the W&OD trail. The girls finish 3rd overall while the boys break several school records.
The Briar Woods girls swim team came home with a 3rd -place finish in the Virginia State Swimming Championships this past Friday and Saturday, well ahead of the boys’ 13th-place, but record-setting, finish. Competing against hundreds of the best swimmers the state has to offer, Briar Woods turned in some amazing performances and came away with numerous school records and top finishes. On the girls’ side, all of Briar Woods’ swimmers had outstanding preliminaries Friday and reached the finals on Saturday. Alli Haufler led the way, capturing 3rd in the 200 Free and breaking a school record by more than 2 seconds, she then came back in the 100 Fly taking 2nd in the state. Stone Bridge girls place seventh, boys finish eighth
UPDATE: After the diving competition, the Stone Bridge girls team fell to eighth place while Marshall pulled into seventh. Stone Bridge does not having a diving team. During the regular season, Stone Bridge won a dual meet against Marshall, so the Bulldogs were looking to finish ahead of the Statesmen in both the boys’ and girls’ ledgers at the Liberty District championship meet Saturday night in Annandale. The girls succeeded, behind senior Catherine (Dani) DeGooyer, who was just edged out for a spot in the Northern Region championship meet in her best event, the 100-yard backstroke.
