Briar Woods Keeps Football Title in Ashburn

Falcons prove way too dominant for Heritage in blowout win en route to third consecutive championship.

The Briar Woods Falcons completely overwhelmed and outmatched Heritage-Lynchburg Saturday to claim a third consecutive AA Division 4 state title in a resounding 52-0 win at Liberty University in Lynchburg. The Falcon defense scored first with a safety credited to J.T. Logan in the first quarter. Next, quarterback Trace McSorley capped a nice drive with a 1-yard touchdown plunge to extend the Falcons’ lead to 9-0. The first quarter was the only one in which Briar Woods did not score in double figures. During the second, Tristan Miller returned a Heritage punt 62 yards for a score, followed by a Cory Colder two-point conversion. Then, McSorley connected with Cam Serigne for another touchdown, essentially putting the game out of reach at 24-0…

Falcons Get Shot at Third State Football Title

Briar Woods cruised past Courtland to earn a spot in the championship against Heritage-Lynchburg; win would make third in a row.

The Briar Woods Falcons racked up 339 yards on the ground and five rushing touchdowns to pull away from the Courtland Cougars 45-15 and advance to the team's third straight AA Division 4 state championship game. Led by running back Cory Colder's 182 rushing yards and four scores, the Falcons broke open what had been a close game until the third quarter with two big plays from quarterback Trace McSorley. As the Courtland defense focused on trying to stop Colder – who gained 120 of his yards on the ground in the first half – McSorley found a Cam Serigne wide open for a 43-yard touchdown pass, and later broke loose for an 80-yard scoring run of his own. With the exception of allowing a few long passing plays, the Briar Woods defense stood as …

Bulldogs, Falcons Advance to Regional Finals

Stone Bridge escaped an early scare versus Langley, while Briar Woods pulled away from Liberty.

While most of us will be deep in turkey-induced comas come Thursday, players and coaches at Stone Bridge and Briar Woods high school will be preparing for what has become a post-Thanksgiving tradition at both schools: regional football championships. Stone Bridge Wears Down Langley Stone Bridge overcame a sloppy offensive performance to outlast a tough Langley Saxon squad and come away with a 33-14 win Friday in Ashburn. After scoring 56 first half points last week against Edison, the Bulldogs (12-0) were mired in a tough defensive battle for the better part of the game. Both teams traded fourth-down defensive stops and punts in a scoreless first quarter. The second quarter appeared headed for a similar outcome until a costly error by the …

Falcons Top Indians; Lose Rolin to Injury

All-American Rolin's status uncertain as Briar Woods prepares to face Eagles.

There are football games when the stats and final score don't tell the full story of the struggle on the gridiron; and Briar Woods’ matchup against Powhatan High School Friday proved to be one of those. The Briar Woods Falcons overcame a sluggish start and physical play from visiting Powhatan to ultimately pull away with a 34-7 win. But that even the postseason win was bittersweet since it came with a cost: All-American linebacker Matt Rolin suffered a knee injury and could not return to the game. His status remains uncertain. The Falcons compiled a 10-0 regular season record and outscored the final three opponents in the regular season by a combined score of 144-0, but on Friday were knotted in a low-scoring defensive battle through the …

Stone Bridge, Briar Woods Keep on Winning

Blowout district victories keep Bulldogs' and Falcons' perfect seasons intact.

While RGIII's unexpected visit to Broad Run's win over Patriot High School created a lot of Ashburn buzz Friday night, across town Stone Bridge and Briar Woods were buzz-sawing through district foes and shutting down two of the areas leading rushers to extend their unbeaten streaks this season. Stone Bridge (6-0) hosted the Langley Saxons (3-3) and lightning quick running back Philip Mun, who entered the game on the heels of a 224-yard rushing performance against Madison. The Bulldogs’ defensive game plan focused on shutting down Mun and the Saxons option attack by playing disciplined, assignment-based football to avoid getting juked by the misdirection offense. While stats don't always tell the full story of a game, in this case they do. …

Briar Woods Blows Past Potomac Falls

Falcons too much for the Panthers as All-American linebacker returns from injury

The Briar Woods Falcons crushed the visiting Potomac Falls Panthers on Friday night, playing near perfect defense and rushing the ball at will on their way to a 49-3 district win. With highlights aplenty, the biggest story for the Falcons was the return of All-American linebacker Matt Rolin to the line up after missing several games to an ankle injury. Briar Woods (5-0, 3-0 in the district) scored early and often to race out to a 35-0 halftime lead. The Falcon offensive line paved the way for the staggering 15 players that combined to rush for 262 yards for Briar Woods on the night. Quarterback Trace McSorley actually led the backfield by super-committee attack, as he racked up 59-yards on the ground. McSorley also threw for 130 yards and …

Briar Woods Powers Past Dominion

Falcons dominate in the trenches to improve to 4-0 on the season

The Briar Woods Falcons rode a stifling defensive performance and a big day rushing from Cory Colder to a 41-7 win over district foe Dominion. The tone for the game was set in the trenches, where the Falcons' (4-0, 2-0 in the district) defensive and offensive lines paved their way to, through and over the visiting Titans.  The most telling statistic came in the form of rushing yards, where defensive linemen Josh Jacob and Nick Merletti led a punishing Falcon front seven that held Dominion (1-2, 1-1) to a total of two yards rushing for the entire game. Jacob finished the game with eleven tackles and two sacks, while Merletti added eight tackles of his own. The Falcon defensive front also routinely pressured Titan quarterback Donald Gasser, …

Briar Woods Football Season Preview

Can the Falcons claim a third straight state championship this year?

The Briar Woods Falcons kick off the 2012 season at home Friday night against the Patriot Pioneers of Prince William County. After going 14-1 and winning a second-straight AA Division 4 State Championship last year, the Falcons return a slew of starters from that championship team, and appear poised to make a run at an unprecedented third state title. Key returners: It's hard to imagine a defending state champion coming back with more key starters than the Falcons will this season. All-American candidate Matt Rolin—who will play linebacker for Steve Spurrier next year at South Carolina—headlines a deep and talented pool of returning starters for Briar Woods. While the defense took the most hits from graduation, returning starters such as …
