VA Tech Student from Ashburn Studied in Nepal

Julia Gillespie was among a group of Hokies who traveled through the Himalayas.

Students and faculty from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the College of Natural Resources and the Environment, including a student from Ashburn, took advantage of a recent break to take a trip to Nepal. The group traveled through the Himalaya Mountains to study environmental and agricultural issues, including erosion and the role of gender in agriculture. They met with farmers, attended lectures with Nepalese professors, trekked through the Himalayas, and even rode elephants. They stayed with local families to get a feel for the culture. “You learn a lot in a classroom about the way the world works,” said Julia Gillespie of Ashburn, a junior majoring in environmental science. “But there’s nothing quite like getting out …

Where They Stand on Gun Violence

Unlike Warner and Kaine, Wolf is mostly silent on regulating firearms.

After the terrible mass shootings in a Connecticut elementary school on Dec. 14, some of our elected leaders have said that we need to take another look at regulations on firearms, along with other issues such as mental health care and violent video games. President Obama outlined some of the measures that might be taken to reduce the unacceptable level of gun violence in this country, measures that he said a majority of Americans support – banning the sale of military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips, and requiring background checks before all gun purchases. Just trying to reconcile your previous statement. Nothing wrong with that at all. Kudos to anyone that keeps an open mind and evaluates based on the facts. I am sure that the tragedy opened her eyes in many ways and I will certainly agree with her that there should not be armed guards in schools. Former Bulldogs Sidelined with Foot Injuries at Tech

Gouveia-Winslow out for the season with sprain, while Wang recovers from foot broken last month.

Two former Stone Bridge football players are currently sidelined at Virginia Tech, where they now play, according to reports from the Washington Post and Hokie Sports. The Hokies lost defensive tackle David Wang last month for eight to ten weeks to a broken foot, according to a previous story by the Post. Outside linebacker Jeron Gouveia-Winslow suffered a Lisfranc sprain against Miami and will miss the rest of the season. He is expected to undergo surgery for the injury next week, according to a report from hokiesports.com. The Washington Post also reported on the injury.
