Multi-vehicle Crash Shuts Down Westbound Greenway Lanes

The accident occurred as heavy rain fell at the end of rush hour Thursday night and sent two people to the hospital.

At least two men were transported to the Inova Fairfax Hospital following a multi-vehicle collision on the Dulles Greenway shortly before 7 p.m. Thursday, according to a report from the Virginia State Police. An eastbound BMW crossed the median into westbound traffic and struck a Dodge SUV, according to the report. The BMW continued moving and struck a Mercedes Benz head on. As a result, a Ford Explorer also struck the Mercedes. The accident was between the Loudoun County Parkway and Route 772 exits, and shut the Greenway down for about an hour. Many drivers exited their vehicles while they waited for authorities to clear the lanes. Eventually, drivers were permitted to pass the accident on the left. The BMW driver, who suffered life-…

The Dulles Greenway’s 8th annual Drive For Charity Thursday raised more money than any previous year, tallying $268,942.85 that will be donated to local charities and a local scholarship program. “The Drive for Charity is always a fantastic event and each year we see a increase in traffic,” said Terry Hoffman, a spokesman for the Dulles Greenway, in a press release. “The commitment Dulles Greenway drivers have to our charity partners are making a real difference in people’s lives.” During the past eight years, the Greenway has raised nearly $1.8 million for local charities and scholarships. The 14-mile Dulles Greenway is privately operated by TRIP II, an entity of Australia-based Macquarie Group, through a concession from the Commonwealth …

I meant Greenway. I used this road once, via GPS, the 1stI time I drove into the area. Drove up to an exit booth and the fee was $4.75! I could not believe it since at home, I could drive twice as far and pay $2.00 or less!! I didn't have any small cash so had to use a credit card to be able to exit the toll ride. I decided right than, almost 4 years ago, I would NEVER use this road again. It has…   more ›

Greenway Toll Hearings Set for June

State law enabled Del. Ramadan to request hearings on private operator’s toll rates.

The Virginia State Corporation Commission’s (SCC) addition of a hearing in Sterling has increased the opportunities Loudoun residents and businesses have to weigh in on tolls charged by the Dulles Greenway. The hearings are part of an investigation Del. David Ramadan (R-87) requested into the toll rates charged by Greenway operator Toll Road Investors Partnership II, an entity of Australia-based Macquarie Group. The Dulles Greenway is the 14-mile private toll road that extends the Dulles Toll Road from Dulles International Airport to Leesburg. Current rates are $4.10 during regular hours and $4.90 during rush hour at the main toll plaza. Hearing information: Thursday, June 6 (two sessions: 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.) Park View High School, …

SCC to Investigate Greenway Toll Structure

Delegate Ramadan made request that the state agency examine the private entity’s operation of the road, consider distance pricing.

Virginia’s State Corporation Commission (SCC) has agreed to investigate the toll structure along the Dulles Greenway, according the Delegate David Ramadan (R-87), who requested the investigation. Elected representatives at the state, local and federal level have long railed against the tolls on the Greenway, which are nearly $5 each way at rush hour for a two-axle vehicle. With the exception of an exist near Leesburg, all toll road drivers must pay the same toll, whether driving from exit to the next or the full length of the road, which runs from the end of the Dulles Toll Road to Leesburg. Several elected officials have called for TRIP II, a subsidiary of Australia-based Macquarie Group, to institute distance pricing, in which drivers …

Looking at the toll price plan for the Dulles Toll Road (DTR) versus the toll plan for the Dulles Greenway (DG), the DG tolls have been much higher than the DTR tolls, but that is about to change BIGTIME. I think that the goal of the apparently insane Greenway purchase plan must be to raise the DG tolls at the same skyrocket rate as the Dulles Toll Road tolls will rise. This plan will drain the …   more ›

WTOP: Virginia Might Buy Greenway

Del. May says negotiations underway for road with high tolls, long called 'highway robbery' by some.

WTOP is reporting Virginia is in negotiations to buy the Dulles Greenway from current owner Toll Road Investors Partnership, a subsidiary of Australia-based Macquarie Group. The news outlet reported Del. Joe T. May (R-33), who represents western Loudoun, confirmed such negotiations were underway. Let us know what you think in the comments below. Should the state buy the Greenway? TRIP was originally designed as a privately operated toll road by a local family, but the family sold it after it failed to turn a profit. State law was created to permit a 50-year concession of the road, after which it would revert back to the state. The law, however, permits the operator to make a profit, which has resulted in main gate tolls near $5 at rush …

Buy it and lower the tolls to cover the cost of the Greenway only. Don't put a additional burden on the taxpayer for a road that is already set up to collect tolls for it's upkeep. Who better to pay for a express road then the users. It should be a non-profit and the tolls should only be as high as the costs to maintain the road. No pork bought with money from the tolls.   more ›

Letter to the Editor

LTE: Ramadan Complaint Targets Wrong Tolls

A reader suggests that Ramadan focus on reducing DTR, rather than Greenway, fees.

Dear Editor,  Del. David Ramadan (R-87) has announced that he is making a formal complaint against the proposed Dulles Greenway toll increase. Del. Ramadan is barking up the wrong tree if he is genuinely interested in securing relief from oppressive tolls … and he knows it. Responding to a Greenway toll increase request, Del. Ramadan demanded Greenway rates comply with Virginia code. FACT … Recently, the Greenway – the privately operated road west of Dulles International Airport – requested a 3.54 percent increase in the toll rate, or $0.14, which they are allowed by law. This 3.54 percent is what Del. Ramadan is complaining about. FACT … Over the next 13 months, Dulles Toll Road (DTR) rates are set to increase 55 percent to pay for the …

Toll increases on the Dulles Toll Road have reduced the number of cars taking the Greenway- this was outside of the Greenway's control. Loudoun's commercial office development has also been very slow to build out, leading to lower than expected traffic to planned commercial areas along the Greenway.   more ›
