SNEAK PREVIEW: Inside the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema

The franchise owners of the first Alamo in the DC area provide a tour in advance of the cinema-eatery's opening in May.

With just a couple of weeks to go before the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema opens its doors at One Loudoun, the franchise owners offered a preview of the theater to media Wednesday as workers continued construction. The official opening date is set for May 3, but the community is invited to take advantage of early staff training days from April 29 to May 1. Then Iron-Man 3 begins showing at 9 p.m. May 2. Other new releases begin May 3. Early screening movies include: Alamo considers itself different from other theaters in many ways, from the way dinner is served during the movie via “ninja servers” to the bottomless popcorn to the strict ban on mobile device usage. “We don’t show dancing popcorn,” said franchise partner Anthony Coco during …

I went to several of the Alamo Drafthouse theatres in the Austin, TX area and they are definitely worth the drive. The food is good, it's a fun atmosphere and they have wonderful outtakes prior to the film, so get there early. They also have special events like sing-a-longs. It's my favorite theatre chain.   more ›

Alamo Drafthouse Opens May 3 at One Loudoun

Beer, food, movies … sing-a-longs? Get ready for a different kind of theater and restaurant.

Next month, give your thumbs a rest. Alamo Drafthouse Cinema opens its Ashburn movie theater and restaurant May 3 at One Loudoun, and while everyone’s welcome, texting and phone calls are not. The strict theater’s founder explains the ban on device usage as way to put more emphasis on the movie. “Texting and talking cannot be allowed in movie theaters,” said Tim League, founder and CEO of Alamo Drafthouse, in a response to an article suggesting text-friendly shows. “Our spaces are sacred spaces for movie fans.” Workers were busy installing signs on the building this week. The sign for the front of the building was expected to be installed Friday morning. The Ashburn site marks the Alamo Drafthouse’s first step in the Washington, DC, region…

Ballpark at One Loudoun Approved

Supervisors OK stadium for Loudoun Hounds and Virginia Cavalry FC; teams shooting for 2014 seasons.

UPDATED: Changes are in italics. The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors voted to approve a 5,500-seat ballpark at One Loudoun Wednesday night. The request came to move the ballpark from Kincora to One Loudoun because of delays at Kincora. Supervisors expedited the request in an attempt to keep the Loudoun Hounds, a professional baseball club, on track for a 2014 season. The Virginia Cavalry FC, an expansion team with the North American Soccer League, also plans to call the One Loudoun ballpark its home. The conditions of the approval permit 12 fireworks displays per year, and those displays must end by 11 p.m. In addition, 17 concerts are permitted, and those concerts must end by 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, 10 p.m. on holidays and 9…

Board Agenda: Budget, Ballpark, Metro Parking, Tax Rate

The Loudoun Board of Supervisors have a wide range of topics scheduled Wednesday.

Among the many items on the Loudoun Board of Supervisors’ agenda Wednesday are the county’s budget and tax rate, a proposal to construct a professional sports park at One Loudoun and proposals to construct parking decks at the Metro stations planned in Ashburn. The $2.8 billion county budget and the $1.205 per $100 of assessed value real estate tax that would support it are all but decided. While changes are not off the table, significant changes are unlikely at this point. School advocates and nonprofits pressed for additional funds, but supervisors held firm. As part of an agreement with Fairfax County and the state to lower the cost of constructing Metro’s Silver Line to Ashburn, Loudoun supervisors agreed to try to find a way to have a…

Fireworks Test Allays Some Ballpark Concerns

A series of tests determined one potential impact of the potential One Loudoun stadium on residents and the nearby heron rookery.

With the Loudoun Board of Supervisors set to vote April 3 on an expedited review of land use changes at One Loudoun that would permit a ballpark for professional sports and community events, supervisors participated in tests Friday to test the impact fireworks displays will have on residents and a heron rookery. The tests seemed to indicate that passing airplanes and trucks produce more noise than fireworks. “The loudest sound we detected over there was me trekking through the brush,” said County Chairman Scott K. York (R-At Large), referring to sounds tests at the rookery. “Seriously.” Traffic and noise have been the primary concerns raised about the proposed ballpark, and fireworks were one aspect of the noise issue. When initially …

You sound like a very young person ... otherwise, I doubt you would be making assumptions as to who moved, built here, and, when. One Loudoun Ballpark Set for April 3 Vote

Scores turnout at Farmwell Station Middle School to express their views on proposed professional sports stadium.

A proposal to permit a 5,500-seat ballpark in One Loudoun that would double as the home for both professional baseball and soccer teams is set for an April 3 vote by the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors. Dozens of speakers and observers attended a public hearing Monday night at Farmwell Station Middle School to voice their support or concerns. Transportation and noise remained top concerns not just because of games, but also because of the 17 concerts that would be permitted each year, under the current proposal. One concern raised by supervisors were additional changes to the One Loudoun project that appeared to be only tangentially related to the stadium. “I feel a little taken advantage of in the process,” said County Chairman Scott …

The board voted unanimously to pass the rezoning of what was to be a Reston-like town to allow a stadium to be in this part of the county. There is no stadium in Reston & its quite successful. I regret moving here expecting it to be like Reston. Instead of a lovely retirement community I'm getting a circus of noisy events until 11pm 2500 feet away. One Loudoun Stadium Hearing at Farmwell Station Tonight

The proposed Loudoun Hounds/Virginia Cavalry FC ballpark proposal at One Loudoun is scheduled for a board of supervisors hearing tonight at 6 p.m.

Loudoun residents are invited to speak tonight about the proposal to permit a 5,500-seat stadium where concerts could also be held at the southwest corner of Loudoun County Parkway and Route 7. The Loudoun Board of Supervisors scheduled the public hearing – which begins at 6 p.m. at Farmwell Station Middle School, 44281 Gloucester Parkway in Ashburn – which is closer to the ballpark site than the county boardroom. The proposal is intended to serve as home field for two anticipated professional sports teams – the Loudoun Hounds professional baseball club and the Virginia Cavalry FC NASL Soccer team – and has earned many supporters and many opponents. Documents related to the proposal can be found on the county’s website. The Loudoun Hounds …

Dusty, word on the street is that there will be a lot of people at tonight's meeting who are firmly against One Loudoun Stadium, but that remains to be seen. Opposing Sides Prepare for Ballpark Hearing

Opponents and supporters of the proposed One Loudoun stadium at One Loudoun organize.

The proposed stadium at One Loudoun that would serve as home field for professional baseball and soccer teams goes to a public hearing before the Loudoun Planning Commission today, and both supporters and opponents plan to express themselves. One Loudoun developers Miller & Smith and North American Sekisui House LLC requested the land use changes to permit 5,500-seat stadium at Route 7 and Loudoun County Parkway after delays at the Kincora development to the east forced the Hounds to consider alternatives. The team once had hoped to start play in 2012, but now is targeting a 2014 start. Some residents who live near the proposed stadium site, particularly those in Potomac Green have formed an opposition group called No Stadium on Route 7, …

Purchase of One Loudoun Sheriff’s Station Finalized

The county agreed to the $8.8 million deal in 2012 for the station expected to open in 2014.

The sale of a 13.3-acre parcel in One Loudoun for a new Loudoun County Sheriff's Office station was completed Thursday. The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors agree to the $8.8 million purchase in July from One Loudoun developers Miller & Smith and North America Sekisui House. The site is located near Russell Branch and Loudoun County parkways. “This is great news,” Sheriff Mike Chapman said in an earlier press release. “Our Ashburn station will be community-based, provide greater access to the public, and will be strategically located to better serve a rapidly growing area of Loudoun County.” A Miller & Smith representative said such a facility will help make One Loudoun a complete community. “We’re building a genuine community here at …

This was Bill May's way of recouping more money from the tax payers pockets. They only paid 35M for the whole One Loudoun property. The Pkwy/Rt. 7 overpass and the Steuart Weller school were built before they filed for bankruptcy, and paid for by a loan which Miller and Smith defaulted on. They continue to fleece the taxpayers of Loudoun County along with all of the Supervisors.   more ›
