The community’s race series offers a range of opportunities to get competitive for a good cause.
If you missed the 6th annual Step Sisters Ribbon Run in April at the Brambleton Town Center, don’t worry, the community’s race season has just begun. Over the year, the planned community in Ashburn has a variety of races that together are now called the Race Brambleton series. The annual New Year’s event in Brambleton benefits a number of local charities; also set for Memorial Day.
More than 1,600 participants turned out to take part in this year’s Ringing In Hope Walk, Run & Fun winter race at Brambleton on New Year’s Eve, despite chilly temperatures that peaked in the 30s. Children ran bills along the course and received medallions for participating in the 1K fun run/walk. There plenty of family friendly activities including pony rides, a barrel train, dancing, a DJ, a moon bounce and more. And of course, as is tradition at Ringing In Hope, racers chowed on a selection of hors d’oeuvres from local restaurants. Sept. 11 traveling memorial joins annual charity event at Brambleton Town Center on New Year's Eve.
Three large bells, weighing in range from 400 pounds to 1,700 pounds, from the Bells of Remembrance Project will be at the New Year's Eve Ringing In Hope charity race at Brambleton Town Center Monday. The bells are courtesy of the project, which began in the days following the 9/11 attacks. The bells have been rung across the states including Carnegie Hall, 9/11 commemorations in New York, Shanksville, PA, and Arlington, VA, and at other events and monument dedications. The annual New Year’s Eve Ringing In Hope Walk, Run & Fun winter race is set at Brambleton Town Center in Ashburn. In its third year, the area’s largest New Year’s Eve race features 10K and 5K races on a USATF-certified scenic course as well as a 1K walk/fun run. Hogettes, the popular Washington Redskins fans, will signal the start of the race; the walk begins at 12:30 p.m. and the 10K and 5K races start at 1p.m. Online registration has ended, but anyone wishing to participant can register on race day at the town center at 10:30 am., or at one of the pre-race packet pickup locations: All children participating in the 1K fun run/walk receive bells to “ring in hope” for great causes, as well as a participation medallion. More than 1,300 runners and walkers participated in the Ringing In Hope Walk, Run & Fun at Brambleton Town Center Monday, which was also Memorial Day. As part of the race theme, “A Salute to Our Troops,” children participating in the 1K walk received flags to wave along the walk route. Ms. Apple Blossom Courtney Ginn greeted the crowd next, followed by a special tribute to World War II veteran Shelton Banks. Banks, 91, a Portsmouth, VA, native, served as a motor machinist’s mate in the U.S. Navy and received an honorable discharge in 1945 at the end of the war. More than 2,000 participants joined the second annual Ringing In Hope Walk Run & Fun New Year’s Eve winter race at Brambleton Town Center, raising money for a range of worthy local causes. 10K Winners 5K Winners Awards also were handed out to the top three overall male and female finishers in both races, as well as the top three finisher in each of the following categories: 19 & under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, and 80-plus. The Ringing In Hope Walk, Run & Fun (10K, 5K Race and 1K Walk) drew more than 500 registered runners to ring in its inaugural summer race June 25 in Ashburn. The Washington Redskin’s Hogettes signaled the start of the race and runners dashed off to compete along the newly certified USATF 10K and 5K course. Aaron Church of South Riding, Va, placed first overall for the men in the 10K, coming in at 33:02. Sarah Bard of Leesburg placed first overall for the women with a running time of 40:24. In the 5K race, first-place overall winners were Axel Tarnvik of Ashburn, coming in at 16:41, and Karen Haddon of Aldie with a run time of 20:56.
