Metrorail and Delgaudio Dominated News in 2012

Controversies over rail decision and Sterling District supervisor were top issues of board’s first year.

Two issues dominated the first year of the current Loudoun County Board of Supervisors’ lineup – the question of whether to approve extending Metrorail’s Silver Line to Dulles Airport and into Loudoun County, and charges surrounding Sterling District Supervisor Eugene Delgaudio. Metrorail The Metrorail decision was not only the Board’s most important decision of the 2012, it may have been the most significant in decades. Seen as a major economic development stimulus by the business community – and some supervisors – it was also strenuously opposed by many residents for a variety of reasons, most notably the cost of the project and means of financing it. With an all-Republican board that placed a high priority on economic development, one …

No Toll Increase

2:36 pm on Thursday, January 10, 2013

They said we needed Dulles Rail to bring commercial development and bring down property tax rates. After less than 6 months, how's that working out? So far we have Toll Brothers asking to rezone Belmont Executive Center from commercial to more residential, and MWAA looking to monopolize commercial development with their property-tax-exempt land surrounding the Rt. 606 station. Bait and switch.   more ›

Williams Chosen as Loudoun Vice Chairman

Broad Run supervisor chosen to replace Janet Clarke, who asked to rotate the position.

The Loudoun Board of Supervisors elected Shawn Williams (R-Broad Run) to serve as the board's vice chairman for 2013. The vice chairman performs duties of the chairman in his absence. Williams replaces Janet Clarke (R-Blue Ridge) who said she preferred that the postition rotate among supervisors, a practice in place in many town councils. Supervisor Suzanne Volpe (R-Algonkian) nominated Williams, and not other nominations were made. Williams was chosen on an 8-0-1 vote with Clarke absent.

Letter to the Editor

Williams Makes Position on OpenBand Clear

The Broad Run supervisor candidate said he was not given the opportunity to sign Southern Walk HOA letter to the editor.

This morning, I became aware of a letter that was published on Ashburn Patch site. I am an active officer on the Southern Walk Board of Directors (SWBOD) with the position of Secretary and was not afforded an opportunity to either review or sign off on the letter to the editor dated 10/7/11 from the SWBOD. I have publicly stated that I would not support the renewal of the franchise agreement and I have pledged to not take M.C. Dean, OpenBand or Van Metre money in my campaign for Broad Run supervisor and I have honored that pledge. I would encourage an inquiry be made as to whether the same commitment has been made by my opponents in Broad Run. It would appear that a person that I have fought alongside for the last two years on the Southern…

Williams Touts Business Experience in Bid for Supervisor

The Republican nominee for the Broad Run District seat calls for no-frills education.

After redistricting earlier this year, Shawn Williams realized there was an opportunity on the board of supervisors. Incumbent Lori Waters (R) had already announced she would not seek reelection, plus with new boundaries, she’s in the Ashburn District. Democrat Andrea McGimsey, now the Potomac District supervisor, had announced plans to run for the new Broad Run District, so Shawn Williams decided to try his hand representing the GOP for that seat. “The [Republican] party encouraged me to consider running,” Williams said, adding that the early notion of running for chairman faded quickly. “I didn’t feel that I had experience or bandwidth to be the chairman, so I didn’t see that as a viable race for me to get in and win.” Broad Run …
