ReplyREGARDING DECENCY ... well, obviously Ramirez--the individual--was not behaving decently by the offenses cited: hit-and-run, NOL, false report. Where’s all the rest of the “indecency”?
Decency occurs in all shapes and sizes, all educational and occupational groups, all colors and ethnic varieties.Herndon is part of a major metro area with many immigrants–most of whom are here legally, not illegally. A large majority of immigrants in this region are citizens or legal non-citizens, and incidentally, they pay taxes at nearly the same rate as native households.
We know many people from all over the world…who are as American as you are. Or do only European ancestors count to you?Michael and Mike – you both sang “It’s A Small World” when you were kids on the street where we live. I know...you grew up.
Sadly, too many in the world today reject any spirit of international unity and defile the ideal of global peace that was the theme of that happy song.
Too bad.
We need positive ideals. We need to share at the human level. And we do all share one planet. -

ReplyDouglas is correct...simple right and wrong. But people do panic and apparently the driver had good reasons to panic under the circumstances.
Mike and Michael -- where are you guys running that you see such an absence of law-abiding citizens/residents in Herndon? ...and "decency died years ago"? Again, are you seeing "illegals" everywhere because that is what you expect or assume or use as some sort of shield? If you do not actually know people, why are you assuming? How do you feel when someone makes assumptions about you based on -- whatever?
Also FYI (just one small example) as of 2009 in the Headstart program, over 140 languages were spoken by Head Start children and their families, and the number of cultures represented is even greater. It’s about the same now. Yes, a large majority are Spanish-speakers, but there are also speakers of East Asian, Middle Eastern, indigenous Central and South American, and other languages.
Your ancestors probably arrived here among the waves of German, Italian, Irish, Scandinavian and other European immigrants…not to mention African and Asian …and each culture has been “picked on” by those from other origins who may have immigrated to America earlier. Canadians tend to not be as “foreign” to native-born Americans. However, even Puerto Ricans who move to the mainland U.S. are sometimes taunted as “foreigners” by some, though they have been American citizens since the passage of the Jones Act in 1917.

ReplyThe Guv loves more highway lanes, yet pretends to remove the gas tax (for those who use the highway and shift it to wholesale which indirectly increases the cost of gasoline--what a dumb dishonest way to tax consumers). The Guv's boondoggle new Rt. 460 is opposed by those in the area, destroys precious wetlands, and the money would be better-spent on improvements ot the parallel existing highway.
At the same time, he killed rail transportation from the ports area north. I.e., dumb and dumber ... but who knows what sneaky benefit he may have invested in that area.
Oh, well. Maybe he'll learn to count and serve the public interest someday. -

ReplyCarol -- Not to worry -- our A.G. will undoubtedly work hard to add a special force to the State Police or whichever law enforcement agency he plans to use to enforce the "Bedroom Ops" troopers who will ensure that no zygote is wasted and no one even talks about having an abortion. Should be bucks for that, right? Certainly no problem allowing Viagra and Cialis being covered by health insurance, right? Just not poor people (and especially not their children).
Maybe there won't be any highway money left at all if they have to borrow for the Social Enforcement Troopers. -

Reply(Part two)
THANK YOU, Del. Scott Surovell (D-Fairfax): “…if anybody–gay, straight–wants to stand up in front of their family and friends and make that commitment to grow old together, it’s not for me, or the judge or the state to deny them that opportunity or that right, he said.” Thanks to Sarah, Carol and many others for intelligent tolerant comments.
Also look for the complete comments that contain the following excerpts:
@Streufjm, +/- 9p.m. Sat Feb 16: “I understand and once shared the religious perspective on marriage, but changed my opinion as a result of reading biological and physiological articles that have clearly shown the generally fixed nature of our sexual orientation. “
@Ruth Tatlock, 4:45pm: “Virginia seems to be behind most states most of the time. For example: The 19th Amendment, women's right to vote, became law in 1919. Virginia didn't see fit to ratify this amendment until 1952!”
AND NOTE @B.Glakas +/- 8pm: “I note that our own Delegate (Rust) sadly did not choose to co-sponsor this.”
Be sure to review the list of patrons of this common-sense bill, HJ 665, at http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?131+ful+HJ665.Virginia is, indeed, behind in a number of social and environmental attitudes. There may be a few bright spots, but they sure seem hard to find – especially in the Legislature.
P.S. for Lizzie: My Grandpa was a minister and I assure you that I am reasonably well-schooled in God's Word.

ReplyIf you don’t believe in same-sex marriage, don’t marry someone of the same sex.
If you believe in marriage, celebrate the commitment of ALL couples.
If you don’t believe in abortion, don’t get one.
If you want your children to follow narrow anti-gay beliefs then teach them (and hope there is not a gay among them).
If you do not practice a religion – good for you, it’s a free country.
If you do practice a religion – good for you, it’s a free country.America is a secular country—the founders of our nation strongly held that basic premise. America stands for religious freedom for all and is NOT a religious dictatorship.
If you oppose some practices due to personal religious beliefs–fine, BUT respect the rights of all to live and love and practice their beliefs whatever they may be, as long as they do no harm to others.
If you are a a committed Christian, ALSO THINK: WWJD?
He would teach, but would not force sets of beliefs on them. Are you listening to Jesus?A.G. Cuccinelli is not a tolerant person; he is a religious dictator. He would protect every zygote, but if born children have poor parents apparently Mr. Cuccinelli would as zealously prevent them from getting health care. Is that rational...or Christian?
How sad for Virginia, because every child is precious.Every child is a gift to love and nurture...not a possession or subject to manipulate or to teach to hate.

The last line is a good distinction to make, Vineet. There are many variations of both "Conservatives" and "Liberals".
Clearly, the tribe of "Conservatives/Republicans" currently in our legislature in Richmond have a big gap in common sense. They continue to pass laws that infringe on the rights of couples to live life and practice whatever they wish. They want to deny women the right to make personal decisions -- yet they want to know every personal act. In order to DO this, they must expand some branch of government significantly to designate them the "bedroom police" charged with tracking every zygote to protect it, every act of fornication or anything kinky, etc etc. That adds up to big bucks for taxpayers to cover the costs of our pious legislators' personal biases and nosiness.
Oh -- they didn't mean to establish bedroom police units? Then why the he*l waste all that time and effort on legislating what they cannot enforce?
Just lighten up and live and let live!
