  • On the article Poll: Does the Virginia GOP Convention Represent True Democracy?

In this Commonwealth, when you vote in the primaries, you do not have to declare that you belong to a particular party. So, if you are a Democrat, voting in the Republican Primary, you may chose the canidate that will most likely be defeated or not be able to do the job. In the latter case, Democrats and Independents can question, "Is that the best they can come up with." Case in point, was "Romney the best the Republicans could come up with? Couldn't they of done better?!"

I was one of the people who advocated of saving the bridge when the new bridge was built; after all I have always loved suspension bridges. The bridge was saved only to have some stupid decision to wrap a chain link fence around it to keep people from jumping off the bridge. It really destroyed the esthetic quality. No fishing, no sitting to look out over the river, because of this ugly fence. The board had to act in some fashion because of lead paint; or letting it fall down by itself would of been okay.

For my CHP, it was having the background check at the Sheriff Office in Leesburg. Long wait. Then to the court house where I paid my fee. 8 days later, it came in the mail. Loudoun County is much more friendlier than Fairfax, as they will go the full 45 days. However, if it takes longer, your receipt is your permit, until you are denied or accepted. You can take the test for competence online now, but not sure it was really required, but good to have. To pass the test you don't need range time, which I think you should. Back then the CHP bypassed Wilder's law of "one a month." which has since been repealled. This passed legislative session made CHP holders names and address no longer available for public record, citing safety concerns. This was brought up as two [anti] newspapers would publish the lists.

The 2nd Amendment guarentees our 1st Amendment freedom of Speech and assembly. Interestingly, through the NDAA (Military Defense Budget) that was just passed, there are two provisions that weaken the 1st; 5th; 6th and 8th Amendments that Obama has been pushing for. Essentially, it gives the Secret Service the power to cordon off an area where the President and/or Vice President will be and declare it a "No Free Speech Zone" which is exactly what happened when Biden came to visit. No pamphlets, no signs, not even stickers.

If you eliminate the Electorial College, then you remove the barriers of having a two party system. Politicians don't think Americans having any sense now, how could they be expected to chose from multiply canidates from several different parties. Think of all the polarized issues we have now. They would not be that way if we were allowed to make our own decisions/choices, but we cannot be trusted to do that, or can we?

In all the mass shooting, one commonality exists except in the Guilford shooting, they all took place in "gun-free" zones. The Guilford shooting was an assasination attempt. Since the Sandy Hook incident, the three attempted mass killings failed because they were in low gun control states: Alabama hospital, shot by a guard; Texas theater, shot by off duty police officer; Oregon mall, killer took own life when confronted by concealed hand gun permit holder. Highest crime rates are in cities with the strictest laws. European countries with extreme restrictions have double our crime rates. Obama, through NDAA, tried to revoke Amendments 1, 5, 6, 8, the courts stopped him, but he tried to appeal the decision. The 2nd is the "We the People" checks and balance to stop the gov't from over stepping the Constitution. Feinstein would like to over turn the 2nd, yet she has a concealed hand gun permit (CA). In New York city, Bloomberg is for disarmerment, but has armed body guards, the police there due routine illegal search and seizure on motorists. The real answer is education. Make a gun safety class available to high school students, using blue guns, instilling responsibility, plus understanding that a text book can stop a bullet, among other survival techniques in gun free zones.

I doubt we are going to see any fixes unless we get new planners, as the intersections are being made worse. The three examples of horrible planning is the left turn from River Creek onto East bound Rt. 7 after coming from Wegmans. You are pointing into oncoming traffic and if hit from behind... More pronounced is the South Rt. 7/15 bypass left onto Ft. Evans going toward Home Depot and the outlet mall; it is nearly impossible to point your wheel toward the medium to get the light to set. That same intersection coming out onto that same bit of highway is trying to get over three lanes of traffic when the medium concrete is too long and then a short distance for the Market Street exit; sometime it is better to go down to Sicolin. As for the bus driver, 9 times out of 10 it is the CDL driver that gets the ticket, regardless.

I remember the early First Night Leesburg events were just throw togethers and not anything formal; mostly volunteer. No street closures, just paper bags lit with candles. A&P was still there and a bakery next door where the County parking garage is now had amature shows, but was more appreciated for the warmth. There were a few businesses open, such as art studios and Market Station was still new and enjoyed the stream of visitors. The objective was met, as the purpose was to keep as many drunk drivers off the roads, with a family sober event. I think a lot of businesses and volunteers from the community would help if the Mayor asked. Police and EMS would probably appreciate it more than having to go to less accident scenes involving alcohol and fatalities.
